Maurice H. Counts

1916 - 2013

Maurice H. Counts, 96, of Ventura, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 3, 2013. He was born to Henry and Josephine (Roberts) Counts on September 18, 1916, in Tucson, Ariz. Maurice had been a resident of Ventura County for 41 years, moving here from Pasadena.

Maurice taught fifth grade for thirty-five years with the Pasadena Unified School District, retiring in 1976.

He loved to play the piano and the organ, especially music composed by Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy and music selections from "Phantom of the Opera." Maurice hosted parties in his home where he enjoyed entertaining for any occasion. He had a wonderful outlook on life and seemed to change the lives of everyone who met him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Counts, in 1994. He is survived by his son, Ronald M. Counts; and his long-time friend and companion for sixteen years, Yvonne M. Woods. He will truly be missed, "he was the greatest man we have ever known."

Services will take place on Monday, March 18, 10 a.m., at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, with The Reverend Dan Hull officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura. A reception in honor of Maurice will take place after the burial.
