Charles (Charlie) Dunn was born August 7, 1931 in Plainfield, New Jersey. He went home to his Lord January 8, 2011.
Charlie was a resident of Ventura since 1948. Charlie attended Ventura High School, Ventura Junior College, and earned a scholarship to Marquette University Wisconsin. He was then drafted by the US Army and upon his discharge in 1955, he continued his education at University of California Santa Barbara, where he met his wife and was awarded his degree in education. He then attended San Diego State University to earn his teaching credential.
In 1958 he became teacher and basketball coach at Oxnard High School. He then transferred to Camarillo High School as head boys' basketball coach for five years. In 1965, he returned to Oxnard High School as head boys' basketball coach and history teacher. During his teaching career, with a successful basketball record under his belt, he became assistant men's basketball coach under Jim Whalen at Ventura Junior College for two years.
He then became the head women's basketball coach at Ventura Junior College with a win/loss record of 138-55. His love of basketball continued after retirement when he volunteered to work with the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students basketball program at Sacred Heart School.
Charlie was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Dunn, brother George, and daughter Elizabeth (Beth) Dunn. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Margaret Walley Dunn, and their four children; Brian C Dunn, Catherine (Cathy) T Dunn, Leslie S Kadilak, and David C Dunn.; daughter-in-law Rosemary Dunn; grandchildren Breanne, Kristin, Hannah, Brian Jr; Charlie, Molly, and sister-in-law Julia Dunn.
Charlie will always be remembered as a quiet man who disliked being in the spotlight, who loved his God, and cherished his wife and family. His strong faith, and often strong opinions were the glue that strengthened him and those around him who loved and admired him.

During my junior year at Camarillo High I had the good fortune to have Mr. Dunn for P.E. As a kid with no discernible athletic talent I was (and remain) grateful for his humane and tolerant approach to teaching. Pointing out that I was a good classroom student and that nobody is good at everything, he said "Just give me an honest effort and you won't have to worry about your grade." That combination of insight and generosity was rare and wonderful, and I remember him fondly. I'm sorry we've lost him.

Hi Dunn Family,
Sorry to hear about Coach Dunn. I never got to play for Coach but my brothers (Jeff & Craig Maulhardt) did. He was a very positive influence. Coach Dunn touch a lot of people. He always had a smile on his face and a kind thing to say. I'm sure he is up in heaven smiling down on us.
May he rest in peace

Dear Maggie and family,
Very sorry to hear of the loss of Charlie. He has been a good friend since we taught at Camarillo High School in the early 1960's. We didn't see each other that often after that, but it was fun "talking school stuff" and talking about our kids when we would get together. He was all about our kids in classes and in sports and how we could reach them as well as teach them. He was always what every teacher should be. He touched the lives of many, many students and was a terrific role model. We really miss him. Agatha and I send our love and prayers to you.
Sincerely, Don and Agatha Miller

Dear Maggie & Family: What a tragic loss for all of those who knew & loved Charlie. It was a privilege & pleasure to have been a loyal friend & fan of his. He was truly a great & wonderful guy. He exemplified "CLASS" in every way. You rarely meet anyone quite like Charlie along the road of life and, when you do, you have a deep sense of gratitude that he happened to pass your way. I can only ask God to bless Charlie's family just the way that He blessed us with such a dear friend. John ("Jack") McGlynn, Ft. Worth, TX.

Mr. Dunn and I shared a room at Ventura Community Memorial Hospital where I had major surgery in late September 2009. During our brief encounter, I enjoyed our discussion about his family and basketball. I was hoping we could meet again, but I guess God had other plans for him. My condolences to his wife and family. I thought Mr. Dunn was a real kind person and I certainly enjoyed his company.

Dear Maggie and Cathy, We were startled to hear that Charlie had died. We were aware of his operation and following issues. We recall his shortened stay at Marquette U., where we enjoyed college basketball. Rodger also agrees and practices his ignoring sports announcers while watching games.
May God welcome Charlie into heaven and guide you through the days ahead. Rodger & Barbara Adams

Maggie and family: I was totally shocked and dismayed to read of Charlie's passing. He yelled at me from a bench outside Costco a couple of days before Christmas and we vowed to get together for a beer soon, He didn't mention any upcoming surgery.
I wa fortunate enough to play basketball with Charlie his last semester at UCSB and then later in city league. He was great to play with and always hit the open man with his bullet passes....had to be on your toes. Of late, I saw him at Jim Cowin's BBQ's, and even Ed Millan at the last one this summer.
I have an eye exam this Friday at 9:30. but will try to make it to the funeral. My prayers are with you at this most difficult time. Phil Rice

We were so sorry to hear the sad news about Charlie. Our hearts go out to you, Maggie, and your entire family. We have many wonderful memories of our times together, especially all the baseball games where we sat together, cheered David and Kevin, then went to Santino's for pizza. Charlie was a man of great dignity - and a wonderful role model to all the young men and women he coached. We will miss him! May God grant each of you strength, comfort and peace during this difficult time and may He fill you with His presence and grace. Love, Dick and Linda French

Dear Charlie; Thank you for all of the wonderful excitement you provided in 1948 and 1949 at Ventura High School when John MCormick would describe the game on the radio as "Another fast break by Dunn, he passes to Milan, who passes it back for a beautiful layup by Charlie Dunn." So many wonderful games when you guys went undefeated and won the CIF Playoffs at Redondo High. You were a wonderful athelete Charlie and a good friend. Thank you again for all of the good times. Now rest in peace my friend...
