Geraldine "Gerry" Dorman Benton, 91, of Ventura died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011.
Geraldine was born in Bowie, Texas, Jan. 17, 1919, a classic beauty, like a 1940s George Petty poster girl. She was known for her flashing smile, quick wit, and easy manner, and was loved by all.
On July 5, 1941, Gerry married Harold Benton from Iowa Park, Texas, a marriage spanning 63 years. In 1942 Harold enlisted with the Navy Seabees while Gerry worked as a secretary in Port Hueneme. In 1948 the Benton's established permanent residency in Montalvo. Gerry was a superb chef, seamstress, and craftsperson.
Retiring in 1970, the couple traveled more than 200,000 miles throughout the U.S. wearing out two motor homes. Gerry continued her travels after Harold passed away in 2004. Highlights were a trip with her brother to Boston and Washington, D.C. She also enjoyed local trips with the Ventura County seniors group.
Gerry is survived by her two brothers, Bud and J.W. of Bowie, Texas; nephew, Jeff Chandler of Ventura; niece, Kaye Chandler of Petaluma; and great-nephews, Cody and Brandon Chandler.
A memorial service is schedule for 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Crestview Memorial Park, Wichita Falls, Texas. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to your favorite charity. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Condolences may be left at www.TedMayrFuneralHome.com.

I grew up as a kid knowing Gerry. It was not until about 4 years ago that my boys and I really got to know her. She taught us more about the Chandler familey than anyone could. Her spirit was good up to the last days. She was still joking with the nurses till she went into her final sleep. We will miss her for ever.

I knew my aunt as Dink, not Gerry. I will always remember her as happy, smiling and full of funny stories. Anyone that knew Dink would remember that big laugh.
She was a strong woman and I will miss her.
