Randall Elliott Obituary

Dec. 28, 1955- Oct. 14, 2010 Randall L. Elliott passed away peacefully on Oct. 14, 2010 with his loving wife at his side after suffering for 20 months with esophageal cancer.

Born Dec. 28, 1955 as "Baby Boy Metcalf" in Portland, Ore., Randy was immediately adopted into the loving arms of his parents, Vernon and Marjorie Elliott. He was raised in Albany, Ore., and enlisted in the Navy during his senior year in high school. Randy graduated from West Albany High School in 1974 and married his first wife, Candice Elliott, while in boot camp. Randy served 20 years in the Navy as a submariner and working in classified projects.

He was stationed at Point Mugu in 1983 and retired as a Command Master Chief on July 31, 1994. His strong sense of patriotism and his pride of country drove him during his military career and throughout the rest of his life. After retiring from the Navy, Randy joined the "civilian" side of the projects that he was working on and enjoyed so much.

In 1997 Randy found a second rewarding career with Santa Barbara Applied Research that afforded him an opportunity to work with wonderful people who mentored and allowed him to reach new levels of self satisfaction. He also graduated from West Coast University in 1997 with his Bachelor of Science in industrial technology. While working for SBAR, Randy traveled to Guam extensively and it was there that he developed his love for scuba diving. Every chance he had he spent diving in the warm waters and photographing colorful fish and ship wrecks.

After retiring from the Navy, Randy established a Neighborhood Council and Watch program for the Carriage Square neighborhood that encompassed over 1000 residents, later establishing the Marina West Council and Watch. In 1994, while working with his adjoining neighborhoods to help keep the surrounding areas safe, he met and fell in love with his second wife, Denise Paul-Elliott, the chair of the Orchard Park Neighborhood Watch and Council. They were married in 2005.

Randy's community activism did not stop with his participation in the Neighborhood Watch and Council programs; he was appointed to the Oxnard Planning Commission in 2006 and was serving as the current chairman of the Planning Commission at the time of his passing. Randy had the unique opportunity to be a part of two loving families; the parents and sister he grew up with and the half siblings he located in 1994.

In October 2006 he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and after having his esophagus removed in January 2007, Randy was declared Cancer Free! After his experience at UCLA Randy began to donate time to help UCLA's Center for Esophageal Disorders to establish some program services for others in his situation which included fundraising, making a new patient video, and assisting in a "buddy" system for new patients and their families. In January 2008 Randy's cancer returned. For the last 20 months he and his wife traveled extensively, talked constantly, and worked to create opportunities for his children and grandchildren to develop loving and lasting memories of him.

He was often quoted as saying, "Don't say tomorrow, as I won't have a tomorrow." So he lived his life for Today! Randy's greatest joy in life was being with and playing with his grandchildren. His eyes sparkled and he smiled brightly at the thought of being with them. He loved being known as Pa and Poppa.

Randy is preceded in death by his father, Vernon Lee Elliott; and his birth mother, Glenna Dee Miller. He is survived by his wife, Denise Paul-Elliott; his daughter, Kristin Brown and son-in-law Erik of Quakertown, Pa.; son, Michael L. Elliott and companion Lizz Kordek of Oxnard; his mother, Marjorie Elliott of Albany, Ore.; sister, Rebecca Luckman and brother-in-law Larry of Albany, Ore.; half-sister, Patricia Hausmann and brother-in-law Jim of Reedsport, Ore; and half-sister, Kelly Haines and brother-in-law Jeff of Battleground, Wash. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Daisy Miller, Ventura; Aiden L. Elliott, Oxnard; Michael L. Elliott, Jr., Oxnard; stepgranddaughter, Autumn Johansen, Oxnard; and the newest little member of the family to be, "Baby Brown." "Lil Brownie," who will never have a chance to know Poppa, will always know of "Poppa's" love. He is also survived by his extended family of nephews and nieces and his former wife, Candice Elliott.

We are thankful for his peaceful passing and he will be greatly missed. A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21 at Conrad-Carroll, located at 401 W. Channel Islands Boulevard in Oxnard, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, Randy requested a donation be made to the UCLA Center for Esophageal Disorders/Dr. Mary Maish, C/O UC Regents (make checks payable to), 10833 Le Conte Ave., CHS 64-128, Los Angeles, CA 90095. Mr. Elliott's arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Funeraria del Angel Conrad-James Reardon, 401 W. Channel Islands Blvd., Oxnard, 487-4911.
