Longtime Ventura County resident and real estate broker Gennie Coates died June 2, 2011, at home after a long battle with cancer.
Gennie was born in Ypsilanti, Mich., July 4, 1924, to Gladys and Joseph Kobel. She was the youngest of three siblings, Ronald Kobel and June Gongalski, her brother and sister, both preceded her in death. Gennie enlisted in the United States Navy in August 1942 and was a veteran of World War II. She was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she met and married Navy pilot Leonard Coates. Gennie settled down in Grand Rapids, Mich., where both of her sons were born. Gennie lived a nomadic and full life, living with her sons in Michigan, Florida, Virginia, Arizona, Texas and California. She was a physical therapist, real estate agent, broker and mortgage broker. In 1971 Gennie settled in California and enjoyed a successful real estate career for the next 25 years.
Gennie is survived by her sons, Michael and David She has five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She will be missed by her family and many friends.
Per her request, Gennie will be cremated and her ashes scattered.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Livingston Hospice in her name. Genevieve was entrusted to the care of family owned and operated Reardon Funeral Home, 511 N. A St., Oxnard, CA 93030; 487-1720.

Genie was a member of the Senior Craft Shoppe in Ventura for several years. Her Origami cards were a big hit and seller. she was missed when she was no longer able to work in the shoppe. she was a very talented lady.
