James Robert Davis, 80, died of natural causes on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, surrounded by loved ones in his Paso Robles, Calif., home.
Distinguished by his characteristically calm and kind demeanor, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Though a gentleman, Jim is perhaps best remembered for his humor, never at a loss for a witty remark delivered in his understated southern accent.
Born in Hillsborough, North Carolina on June 11, 1930, to parents Calvin and Mina Davis, Jim enlisted in the US Navy to serve his country during the Korean War soon after high school graduation. During the war, he served at a weather station in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska and on an aircraft carrier outside of Japan. Upon conclusion of the war, he returned to his home state to marry his own southern belle sweetheart, Pansy Ann Hicks, on May 9, 1953. Soon after, he graduated from North Carolina State University with a bachelors degree in civil engineering, becoming a civil engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
In 1963, Jim moved his family to California when Western Electric transferred him to Oxnard. Though this career move transplanted him to California, he always maintained his sports fan loyalty to North Carolina, particularly Duke University. Jims engineering career culminated in a position in management and data processing for the Port Hueneme Seabee Base, from which he retired in 1989. Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to a small farm in wine country Paso Robles, Calif., where he dabbled in weekend farming and enjoyed spending his days maintaining his property and relaxing with his beloved dogs.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Pansy Davis; his children, James Davis Jr. and his wife Stephanie, Greg Davis and his wife Belinda, and Amy Davis-Hjortland and her husband Jon; and his grandchildren, Lindsey Davis, Sarah Davis, Jake Hjortland, and Tyler Hjortland. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Hospice of San Luis Obispo County or The Humane Society.
