Joyce Key Obituary

Joyce Kay (Mixon) Key passed away on January 5, 2011 in the company of her nieces. She was the youngest daughter of Moman Lemuel Mixon and Billie (Bailey) Mixon.

She was born on October 6, 1941 in Longview, Texas and grew up there. She received her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education at East Texas Baptist University and her Masters at the University of California, Northridge. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. As an elementary school teacher for over 26 years , she delighted in teaching kindergarten and taught in the Hueneme School District in California. After retirement, she left California to move to Colorado to be closer to family, even though it meant leaving behind many very dear friends and coworkers.

Survivors include her sister, Helen McKeown; nieces Susan (Daniel) Lutz, Rebecca McKeown (Thomas Hilinski), Patricia (Theodore) Cochran, Cynthia (David) Nolin as well as many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the charity of your choice.

I had the pleasure of knowing Kay for many years as teachers in the Hueneme School District. I considered her to be my mentor in classroom teaching and as a teacher advocate within the Hueneme Teacher's Association. Kay was a valued friend and I will miss her. Sincere sympathy to Kay's family.

Kay was a truly dedicated teacher, an active Union member caring for other teachers, and a wonderful friend. I know I am not alone feeling a deep loss. Charleen Z. Behrschmidt

I am so sorry for your loss. Kay was a lovely lady whom I enjoyed as my neighbor and friend on Dara St. We shared kindergarten stories and played Scrabble together. In spite of her problems, she was always cheerful and I would look forward to her company. She was an inspiration to me. I missed her when she moved. God bless her.
