Lorraine Ballance Obituary

Longtime Ventura resident Lorraine Ballance passed away peacefully in her sleep, at home, early on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 25, 2010. She had a long and eventful life, and will be missed by her family and many friends.

Born April 12, 1922 in Bethel, Mo., Lorraine was the only child of William H. and Bessie Fox. She had fond memories of her early years in Bethel, where her grandparents owned and operated a general store. When the depression set in, Lorraine and her parents moved to Washington, D.C., where her parents were able to find work. During her girlhood in Washington she lived on a street with six other girls her age, and for the rest of their lives, they all remained lifelong friends.

With Lorraine's passing all but one of these friends for life are now gone. Lorraine married Lieutenant Chester F. Lowe in 1939, and their son, Christopher R. Lowe, was born in 1943. Sadly, Lieutenant Lowe was killed in 1945 at the end of WW II. For the next several years, Lorraine lived with the Lowe family, moving from Denver to New Orleans to Lawerence, Kan., where she attended The University of Kansas for two years.

In 1948, she married Richard L. Ballance, and their daughter Karen was born in 1949, followed by a son, Kurtis, in 1950. Richard and Lorraine and the three children moved to Ventura in 1955. Lorraine and Richard divorced in the early 1960s, but Lorraine and her children remained in Ventura. She went back to school at Ventura College, and then went to Cal State Northridge, where she finished up her education and obtained her teaching credential in 1964. She taught for one year at El Camino Elementary School in Ventura, and the following year she transferred to Saticoy School, where she taught third grade for the next 18 years. While teaching in Saticoy she made many friends who were very important to her for the rest of her life. After retiring in 1982, Lorraine enjoyed traveling, going to plays and musicals with friends, playing bridge with various groups, bowling, some volunteer work, and many other activities. She also kept in touch with and frequently visited friends and relatives in many parts of America.

Lorraine's health began declining in 2005, starting with a broken hip, but she continued many of her activities for the next several years, and still enjoyed a wonderful quality of life. She had been suffering from congestive heart failure for several years, and in the fall of 2010, her condition declined rapidly. Right up until the end of her life, she was still enjoying visits from friends, enjoying an occasional outing, reading her newspapers, and remembering old friends and days gone by. She still had many friends who cared about her, and they, along with her family, will have many fond memories of her.

Anyone wishing to honor her memory should make a donation to either Friends of the Ventura County Library, or the Ventura Chapter of Mended Hearts, two organizations she believed in and was involved with right up until the end of her life.

Although we only knew her for a short few years in the special setting of a monthly church meal it was truly rewarding to visit and talk with her on a regular basis. She was very intelligent and informed on a wide variety of subjects. We very much liked her charm and class and are sad that we no longer will be able to enjoy her company at the meals. I've known Lorraine since I was a little girl. She was a close friend with my Grandma (Gabby Hoyt) and her oldest son, Chris, has been a lifelong friend of my Dad, Pat Hoyt. She lived down the street from my Grandparents in Ventura so we spent a lot of time with her. She was like a Grandmother to me and I will forever miss her. I am thankful for the time I spent with her but I regret not seeing her before she passed away. She was a wonderful, caring and loving person.

I met Lorraine in January of 2001. She and her two children, Karen and Kurt, have become treasured friends. I call them my "California Family". I live in Colorado and every summer I looked forward to going to Ventura. I knew there would be many adventures such as going to Lorraine's favorite restaurants as well as going to new ones. A favorite was a place called Mussel Shoals, that was right on the oceanside. We also had adventures traveling to cities like San Diego and San Francisco to see a baseball game and enjoy a hotdog and beer. There were many beautiful oceanside trips and visits to the Ventura County Fair. While Karen would go thift shopping many times I would stay in the car and visit with Lorraine inbetween her book reading and working on crosswords--two things she LOVED! No matter how many days I stayed in Ventura she would always say,"Carol Ann, you have to stay longer next time". I also enjoyed the three trips she made to my home in Colorado. We shared a teaching career and love of the children, as well as a love for cats. I will miss receiving "cat cards" in the mail with newpaper clippings that she would send. I am thankful to have had Lorraine in my life.

Every summer I would look forward to going to Ventura. I knew there would be many adventures such as going to Lorraine's favorite restaurants as well as trying new places, and going to the Ventura County Fair. There were also many traveling adventures to cities like San Diego and San Francisco to see professional baseball games and enjoy a hotdog and beer. We also had many beautiful trips along the oceanside. While Karen would go thrift shopping many times I would sit with Lorraine and visit in the car inbetween her book reading and working on crosswords. My mother, Charlotta Curtis, was one of the lifetime childhood friends mentioned in Lorraine's obituary. As Charlotta's daughter, I spent many wonderful days in Ventura on the beach with this lovely, vibrant woman who felt very much like an aunt to me. We likewise gathered around my Aunt Eola's dining room table and played games and laughed. Add to that list camping and grunion running and the fun that goes with that! She further influenced my own growing family as she read stories to my children and taught many of the same games to them. My oldest son now teaches the same games to my grandchildren. Imagine that... being my mothers dear friend, this sweet woman influenced the lives of my grandparents, my parents, myself, my children, and my grandchildren. That's 5 generations her life enhanced. I learned in those settings what true friendship looked and felt like. So many sweet remembrances that I will carry with me always. Lorraine will be missed.

I met Lorraine a couple of times while she visited her son, Kurt in Idaho. I know how much her children loved her and cared for her.
Her passing ends a chapter, I'm sure she'll be missed.
