Murray Wald Obituary

Murray Wald

Camarillo, CA

9/16/1922 ?12/4/2015.

Musician. Born and raised in New York City, at a young age Murray became enamored with the sound of the saxophone on the radio. In 1936 he auditioned and was admitted to the newly-formed LaGuardia High School of Music and Arts. Before graduating, he went out on his own as a saxophone/clarinet player. In 1942, Glenn Miller, recognizing Murray's talent, chose him as one of the first members of the WWII Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. After the war, Murray remained independent and, chosen by name conductors without having to audition, he always had a "gig." He traveled from the east to the west coasts and Hawaii earning a living, but he never called it "work." After 25 years, he and his wife Fran settled in Aurora, CO. Fran opened an art supplies store and Murray learned the art of framing, but continued playing gigs. They then moved to the Conejo Valley and operated Fran's Framing in Thousand Oaks for a number of years, gaining a fine reputation and making many new friends.

After retiring to Camarillo, Murray continued to offer advice to young Ventura County musicians and formed the "Glenn Miller Young Americans" to introduce this generation to jazz. He loved to share his experiences in the music business with anyone who had the time to listen.

Murray was the last surviving member of the Glenn Miller WWII Army Air Force Band. He is survived by a son, Robert. His wife Fran died in 2013 after 70 years of marriage.

Murray was our neighbor and a delight to listen to- what a life he had! He realized he was fortunate & had a wonderful life shared with the love of his life, whom he missed so very much.
May he rejoice to be with her again! He was a sweetheart & I regret not having more time to share with him.
