Rick climbed the stairway to heaven Sept. 28, 2010. He passed peacefully in his home from liver cancer.
Rick was born in Oakland 60 years ago to parents Olin "Dick"Payne (deceased) and Betty Vinson Payne. In addition to his mother, Rick is survived by his loving wife, Rosemary; children, Denise Torres, Cindy Escareno and Eli Payne (Martha); six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Rick was loving and tender with the little ones and delighted in their "great spirits." Rick attended schools in Oxnard and Santa Paula, living the last 35 years in the Ojai Valley. Rick was a Marine Corps. combat veteran serving his country in Vietnam during 1968 through 1969. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local #12 for more than 35 years and was affectionately known as "Major Payne."
He took special pride in his work and felt honored when his son, Eli, followed in his Dad's footsteps. Rick was also a member and served as Master of Masonic Lodge Poinsettia #633, Ventura in 1995.
The family wishes to thank Assisted Home Hospice for their excellent service in the care of Rick that made it possible for him to remain at home surrounded by those he loved.
A memorial service will be held at Lake Casitas, Ventura County, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16. Channel Islands, Cremations, A Heritage Life Tribute Center, Ventura, is assisting the Payne Family with the arrangements, 240-1359.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Rick. My heart goes out to you at this time. I have such fond memories of when our sons were in DeMolay and Rick’s involvement. Especially, Christmas caroling in an eighteen-wheeler with the Masonic Youth Groups and their families.
Rick was such a great guy and will be dearly missed. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
