October 29, 2010 Richard (Dick) McKendry passed on.
Born Oct. 22, 1930 in Fillmore to William and Rachel McKendry one of five brothers and sisters. After having served honorably in the US Navy and discharged in 1950, he came home to wed his high school sweetheart Jean Briggs. He began his career with the Ventura County Sheriffs Department where he served as a deputy and detective. He then transferred to the District Attorneys Office where he worked as an investigator and later became a death investigator for the Coroners Office.
His distinguished investigative abilities led to his appointment to Chief Investigator. After several years in Ventura County, he moved to Bakersfield where he finished his long and distinguished 26-year career applying his investigative expertise to the Kern County Coroners Office where he retired in 1986. He also spent time volunteering for the Kern County Sheriffs Search and Rescue Team. Dick loved fishing, golfing and barbecuing with friends and family. His lifes legacy of hard and ethical work and his loyalty to his family and the community he served. He will be forever loved and remembered by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Melba; sons, Jeff, Mike and Mark; and daughter, Judy. He is graced with seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4 at Mission Family Mortuary, 531 California Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93304. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd., Arvin, CA 93203 on Friday, Nov. 5 at 10:45 a.m. with reception to follow at the Elks Lodge in Bakersfield at 1616 30th St., Bakersfield, CA 93301-1908.

So sorry to hear of his passing. I remember his laugh when Mike would take the "car" to school. He was such a warm man. My thoughts are with all of you at this time.

I had not met your father but having served with Mark in the US Navy and having briefly meeting Mike & Judy I know that he had to be an excellent man to have children with the level of character they used to direct their lives. May God's peace be with you as you proudly remember the impact that 1 man made and carry on his legacy.

My best to all of your family, my thought are with each of you. He was a wonderful man who was my Dad's best friend when they were Detectives at VSD. My Mom remembers many get together's and fun at our house at the beach. He also made a mean BBQ! God Bless his family.
