Omar Dr. Obituary

Omar Franklin Omar Franklin was born in Greeley, Colorado, on May 26, 1930 and went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 27, 2012. Omar, also known as "Doc," lived his life in service to others. He began his medical career in 1962 and continued serving others for 50 years through his gifts of healing and humor. Omar met his beloved wife, Ann Kocher Newhard, at the Colorado State College of Education at Greeley, Colorado, and they were married two years later on June 7, 1954 in Kingsville, Texas. Omar had joined the Navy in 1952 and was a Lieutenant JG. He flew the S2F Sub Hunter-Killer aircraft off the aircraft carrier, Princeton. Omar loved flying airplanes, but his dream was to be a medical doctor. He was honorably discharged in 1958 and entered medical school at University of Colorado. After his graduation, he began his medical residency at Gorgas Hospital in Panama, Canal Zone. Omar and his wife, Ann, returned to Colorado three years in a row so they could adopt their children, Ellen, Lori, and John. In 1968, Omar, Ann, and their children relocated to Visalia, CA where "Doc" Franklin opened his private family medical practice. In addition to serving on many medical boards, he was President of the Medical Staff for Kaweah Delta District Hospital in 1982-1983. He was also a faculty member of the University of California San Francisco Medical School from 1976-1992. During this time he hosted and taught medical students and resident physicians. "Doc" Franklin loved volunteering medical care for a variety of different community organizations. Near his heart was the Visalia Rescue Mission. He began working with them in the mid-1980's and faithfully served them until his death. He also volunteered for various other mission organizations such as the Celebrant Singers and loved getting the teams ready to travel overseas. He is well known for all the shots he gave to everyone who needed them. Even after "Doc" formally retired in 1994, he continued to serve others spreading love, compassion, and healing to all who knew him. In addition to being a doctor, Omar loved music and playing his horns. He is often remembered for his appearances at Visalia Recreation Department Little League games where he "tooted" his horn to the delight of spectators of all ages while he watched his son play baseball. Omar loved the Lord Jesus with all his heart. He and Ann have been members of the Gateway Church (formally First Baptist Church) for over 35 years. He was a devoted member of the church music ministry and loved playing his horn in the church orchestra and collecting the music for the entire orchestra every single week. Omar is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ann Franklin, his daughters Ellen Gutierrez and Lori Irvine and their husbands, Marvin and David, his son, John Franklin and his wife Liza. Omar treasured his seven grandchildren: Eric, Jessica, Michelle, Nicole, Ann, Tim, and Rebecca. A service celebrating "Doc" Franklin's life will be held at Gateway Church, 1100 S. Sowell St. on Sunday, July 1 at 2:00pm. Please wear bright colors in celebration of "Doc's" life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Visalia Rescue Mission, 500 E. Race, Visalia, CA or to Gateway Church Music Program 1100 South Sowell, Visalia, CA. Condolences may be offered at www.millerchapel.com.

Dr. Franklin prepared us for our first mission trip, as he did many others. So many lives were touched as a result of his good work.Though we met Dr. Franklin only a few times, his kindness, warm personality, and brilliant mind made a lasting impression on us. We are so sorry to hear of his passing. Ellen and family, you are in our prayers.

So sorry to hear of Dr. franklin's passing. I worked for him briefly, and we spent time with him, Ann, Ellen, Lori, and John. He loved to tell jokes, and office staff loved to hear them! He loved his family and his patients. He was the epitome of giving service and demonstrating integrity. His acts of kindness were frequent and often spontaneous.
He once dressed up in his Santa suit and rang our doorbell one night, hoping to surprise our preschooler. To his dismay, our son asked, "Why is Dr. Franklin wearing Santa Claus' clothes? Undaunted, he gave him the presents from his big red bag and went his merry way.
Our love and prayers go out to Ann, his sweetheart, and his children. He will be greatly missed. But I am sure he has important work to do for the Lord.

Dr Omar was my childhood and adult physician until he retired. I'll never forget 1982; when he showed up at my house one evening after my having a procedure in his office earlier that day. It was like a scene from the movie "Field of Dreams" as he stepped inside our home, black medical bag in hand. He made sure I was still doing well. His surprise "house call" was a gesture that Dr's don't do anymore.
When I saw him last it was heart-warmingly clear he was still concerned about his patients. His life was a blessing and an example of God's love and care for us.

I will remember Omar as a good natured and gracious gentleman that I was fortunate to have known.

I would like to share a brief, but significant, time that Omar and I spent together. This occurred in Township 3 Range 4, Maine – a fairly remote area near the Quebec boarder. The occasion was that of John's moose hunt, on the evening following the successful conclusion of that hunt.

We had been up very late, attending to the moose, having something to eat afterwards, and getting all of the ‘youngsters' off to bed. It was October, very clear and below freezing. We were many, many miles from the nearest source of light pollution. Omar and I sat together in a rather large clearing in the forest watching a horizon to horizon display of Aurora borealis.

We sat there for most of the night, speaking little, content to absorb the celestial phenomenon overhead. There were even a few meteorites visible among the breathtaking color patterns. It was a spiritual experience.

My condolences to the family.

Celebrating a life well lived. We will cherish the memories forever. He DID make a differance in alot of lives. Bringing food to our house when my father died and hearing him play his horn while playing in the park. Will always bring a smile.

I remember Dr. Franklin when I was employed at Family Planning and he volunteer his services in the early 1970s. He was so down to earth, very kind and so helpful; everyone loved him at the clinic (staff and patients)
Thank you Dr. Franklin
God Bless You and all your loved ones.

Doc Franklin was this shining light that walked down the halls of Kaweah Delta. He always had a smile on his face and would take time to chat with you in the cafeteria. Oh yeah, I don't know how many free flu shots he gave away. He always had a couple of syringes in his shirt pocket. He will truly be missed.
