Nancy Hoyt Obituary

Nancy Lundgren Hoyt passed away Dec. 8, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12 at Woodway United Methodist Church, 21000 West Woodway Dr, Highway 84, Woodway. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Grace Gardens Funeral Home, 8220 Woodway Dr., Waco.

She would have celebrated her 35th wedding anniversary next month to her soul mate, John. He was the love of her life, and together they raised three children in a loving and nurturing home.

Nancy Hoyt was an amazing woman, wife, and mother. She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, served on numerous boards and committees with the United Methodist Church and served eight years on the Planned Parenthood board of directors for Central Texas. Nancy was a 1974 graduate of Elgin High School and attended Sam Houston State University, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and met her husband John. She graduated from Texas Women's University in 1978 with a degree in Home Economics Education.

Nancy loved to travel and visited 34 different countries throughout the course of her life, many of them multiple times. Nancy and her daughter Emily Hoyt Crew, were original cast members of the Amazing Race on CBS and shared an incredible adventure together. Nancy's love of travel was not just about seeing highlights, but about understanding the people and their culture. One of her fondest memories was giving pens to children in Cambodia. Whether she was walking on the Great Wall of China, climbing mountains in Patagonia, zip lining in Costa Rica or running through a market in Tunisia, Nancy loved the journey. Nancy enriched the travel experience for those around her with her brave exploits; from eating a witchetty grub in Australia, to honing her skills at a cooking school in Tuscany. Nancy was willing to truly embrace and experience the richness the various cultures had to offer. She loved cooking, sewing, spending time with her puppies, and dining (especially with her cherished and beautiful friends). She was surrounded until the end with incredible love by her friends and family and will be eternally missed and forever remembered.

Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Greg Lundgren.

Nancy is survived by her husband, John Hoyt Jr. of Woodway; daughter, Emily and her husband, Matt Crew, of Austin; sons, Matthew Hoyt of New Braunfels, and Eric Hoyt of Springdale, Ark.; grandchildren, Andrew Hoyt and Caroline Crew; parents, Shirley and E.O. "Sammy" Lundgren Jr., of Elgin; brothers, Stan Lundgren of Santa Cruz, Calif., Brad and Mark Lundgren of Elgin.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the ALS Association of South Texas: 8705 Shoal Creek Blvd., Suite 114, Austin, Texas 78757 (512) 371-1718, or Planned Parenthood of Central Texas, PO Box 1518 Waco, Texas 76703 (254) 759-5750.

It seems odd to leave a message of condolences after this long, and also by a complete stranger, although a fellow Texan. But we just watched The Amazing Race, and Nancy was such a loving, classy woman who was the spitting image of one of my dearest friends in Houston. My friend Debbie was very much like Nancy in her sweetness and her strength of character, her love for others, and her sense of adventure from a seemingly quiet and demure woman. She recently went to be with the Lord from having cancer, and I looked up Nancy for updates and was so sad to read that she had passed back in 2011 from ALS.
I'm so sad that Emily and the rest of Nancy's family and friends have gone through this terrible loss. I saw that she was a fellow Christian, and I look forward to meeting her in Heaven someday. I'm sure she and Debbie are having a wonderful time with Jesus! Praying for God's love and sweet comfort for you all.

I've just watched the first season of the Amazing Race, and Nancy and Emily captivated my heart. They gave such main character energy, and I was crying so hard when they were eliminated. The tears kept coming down my face, watching the last 4 episodes didn't feel right without seeing Nancy's charm and Emily's grit. I searched up Nancy and Emily after I finished watching season 1, and to my dismay, I found Nancy had died 12 years ago. I kept crying for a good 10 minutes. After I was done crying, I went back to the episodes where I saw Nancy and Emily celebrating and happy. I loved watching Nancy on the Amazing Race, and I know she had a great time on the show. My condolences to the family of Nancy, she was a great woman.

Even though I only knew her for a brief moment, it was a joy to have spent time with Nancy in Tuscany in 2010. I have fond memories of making pizza and tortellinis with her at the villa. She was such an inspiration and will remain in my heart. Condolences to her family.

I never had the privilege of meeting Nancy. As strange as it sounds, I only 'knew her' from watching her on television... but the strange thing about reality television is it gives people an opportunity to glimpse into the incredible spirit of complete strangers. Though I never met Nancy, I remember how touched I was to see Nancy and Emily get to experience an adventure of a lifetime together. It was so evident that Nancy was such a warm, caring and genuine person and I'm so saddened to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Dear John, Emily, Matthew and Eric, Nancy was a truly special woman. I am so sorry to hear about her passing. Those of us who had the privilege to share the Amazing Race experience with her are sad to lose a part of our extended Race family. Whether it was meeting her for the first time in Zambia or spending time with her in India, I'm happy to have shared one of the highlights of my life with her and Emily. She will never be forgotten and neither will her example of class and patience to millions of people around the world.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family through these tough times. I must say, my parents considered Nancy as one of the most loving and wonderful individuals they knew. Whether it was traveling around the world or just down the road to El Con, I'm certain that those wonderful times will always be cherished. Nancy will be greatly missed amongst everyone she came in contact with, but will always be remembered.
