Lucille Gilliam Obituary

Lucille Mabry Gilliam, 93, left this earth for her heavenly home Thursday, July 16, 2009. Services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at Laurel Land Chapel of Chimes in Ft. Worth. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. at Waco Memorial Park. Mildred Lucille Mabry was born May 11, 1916, in Rockdale, to Barbara Leeper and G. L. Mabry. After the family moved to Waco, she met her high school sweetheart, Marvin L. Gilliam, and they were married Dec. 24, 1934. They were married 54 years until his death in 1988. Lucille received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Baylor University and subsequently held teaching positions in the Axtell, LaVega, and Robinson school districts. In 1960, she became a school counselor with the McLennan County Department of Education, a position she held until her retirement in 1977. Mrs. Gilliam was a charter member of Bellmead First Baptist Church in Waco. After moving to Fort Worth in 1996, she attended Wedgwood Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the Esther Sunday School Class until her recent illnesses. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Barbara "Todie" Rose; and her brother, G. L. Mabry Jr. Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Vicki Gilliam of Fort Worth; son, Dr. Larry Gilliam and wife, Glenda, of Irving; granddaughters, Valerie Barnett of Fort Worth and Stephanie Potter and husband, Greg, of McKinney; great granddaughter, Hannah Albright; great grandsons, Zach Barnett and Mark Potter; "adopted daughter," Linda Haptonstall; nieces, Barbara Huber and husband, Charles, and Sonja Camden and husband, Fred; nephews, Dr. Dan Crawford and wife, JoAnn, Bob Crawford and wife, Linda, and Dr. Tom Roberts; and numerous extended family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hannah's House, 525 N. Sowers Road, Irving, TX 75061; Wedgwood Baptist Church in Fort Worth; or Community Hospice of Texas. Vicki, we are sorry to hear of the lost of your mother. She, along with your dad, made many lasting impressions on many of us at Bellmead Frist. She is with the Lord and the love of her life.

I had the privilege to work for Marvin Gilliam at Gilliam Grocery in Bellmead from 1973 to 1977. Mrs. Gilliam was always gracious and kind to me and everyone she met when visiting the store. I pray for God to comfort her family in this time of loss.
