ALAN SPECTOR Obituary

ALAN MARVIN SPECTOR
Loving and loyal to his family; intelligent, educated, kind, witty and wise; respected by those whose lives he touched, Alan Marvin Spector, age 87, passed away September 5, 2015.Alan married Ruth Kluger in 1959 and together they raised three children. Moving from Philadelphia, Pa, to Rockville, Md, in 1968, he and Ruth created a haven there for their family. Alan loved to spend time with his family in the backyard observing the fruits of Ruth's gardening (done with his shoveling assistance) as well as the birds and deer that visited. In his professional life as a lawyer, Alan's judiciousness, sharp memory and attention to detail earned the admiration of his colleagues, who called him a "lawyer's lawyer." He graduated from University of Pennsylvania Law School and was associate editor of its law review. For most of his career, he served as an administrative law judge for the federal Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals, rising to the position of vice chairman and then leading the board as the acting chairman until his retirement in 1999.Born in Philadelphia in 1928, Alan moved with his family in his teens to Lebanon, Pa., where he graduated from high school and attended Lebanon Valley College. He joined the army in 1946, working as a psychiatric social worker at Fort Dix, NJ. After his service he entered Syracuse University, where he majored in psychology and graduated in 1950 summa cum laude and became a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society.Upon earning his law degree in 1953, Alan served a clerkship (1953-54) at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia for Judge Harry E. Kalodner. He later was associate director of the University of Pennsylvania Institute of Legal Research, where he studied federal interdiction of pornography and foreign propaganda, and then practiced law in Philadelphia until taking the position at the ASBCA.Alan's full life included a zeal for bowling, Ping-Pong, dancing, and science fiction and he loved relaxing with the family's dog, Ginger. He was a joker and master of the humorous, ironic comment, responding with "life is not fair" - said with a smile - to matters great and small.Born to Rose and Simon Spector, Alan is survived by wife Ruth Kluger Spector, daughters, Rosanne and Carol, and son, Lee. He is also survived by daughter-in-law, Rebecca Neimark, sons-in-law Steve Estes and Tino Markworth, grandchildren Eli Spector, Anya Spector, Zinnia Estes, sisters-in-law including Janice Spector, Renee Subrin, Phyllis Kluger, brothers-in-law Norman Kluger and Bert Subrin, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Maury and Robert Spector, sister-in-law Celia Kluger Freed and brother-in-law Monroe Freed. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 8, at 11 a.m., at Roosevelt Memorial Park, Trevose, Pa. The family will receive guests at his late home, where shiva will also be observed September 9 and 10, 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.Condolences may be made to the family at www.hinesrinaldifuneralhome.com

Dear Ruth,
Alan was very special. Although we compared our family trees, we could find no links, but our links through Har Shalom meant friendship with Alan and you. Thank you, Augie Spector
