JOHN HAROLD

HAROLD John J. Harold John died on June 20, 2017 in Fairfax, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Penny; his sons, John Harold Jr. (Jan Harold) and Brendan Harold; grandchildren, John Spencer Harold and Bridget Harold; sister, Andrea Harold, sister, Holly Egner (Charly Egner) and brother Christopher Harold (Martha Harold) John was born in Yonkers, New York on April 13, 1943 to the late John R. Harold and Dorothea Gorman Harold. As a young child John spent several years in Japan while his father served as a JAG officer under General MacArthur during the Occupation, this was a significant life experience for John of which he spoke often. After returning to the states John attended schools in the New York City area and graduated from Manhattan College, received a Masters Degree in Psychology from Bowling Green in Ohio and pursed advanced graduate education in Clinical Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. John spent 37 years as a child psychologist beginning his career with the Commonwealth of Virginia and moving to the Fairfax Falls Church Community Services Board as Mental Health Services were being transitioned to local jurisdictions. John's area of expertise was working with victims of child sexual abuse and youthful sexual offenders. In addition to working with clients, John served as a liaison between the CSB and the Juvenile Court and developed residential programs for both youth and adults. In conjunction with colleagues from the Department of Family Services and Child Help, John was instrumental in establishing a program to centralize the investigation and support services for victims of sexual abuse. After his retirement from Fairfax County. John began a second career as the Registrar of Voters for the City of Fairfax and later served as a member of the City of Fairfax Electoral Board. In addition to his career, John had many civic activities including serving on the Fairfax Juvenile Court Advisory Committee including many years as the group's Chairman,served as the first male member of the City of Fairfax's Commission for Women, served with the Fairfax Medical Reserve Corp. and was a member of the City of Fairfax's 2020 Commission. John was actively involved with his Home Owners Association including serving two terms as Chairman. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday June 28, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM at the Demaine Funeral Home 10565 Main Street Fairfax, VA 22030. Funeral services will be held on Thursday June 29, 2017 at 1 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment to follow at the City of Fairfax cemetery.A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday June 28, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM at the Demaine Funeral Home 10565 Main Street Fairfax, VA 22030.
