GARY BROWN Obituary

BROWN GARY W. BROWN Passed away on August 4, 2017, at age 75. He was born on April 7, 1942, in Picher, Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1964 and University of Oklahoma School of Law in 1967. He served in the Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1967 to 1970, during the Vietnam War. He practiced law in the District of Columbia and Virginia from 1967 to 2017. He served as the past president of the DC Defense Lawyers and was named Lawyer of the Year in 1990. He had been named one of the Best Lawyers in America, Washington, DC; Best Lawyers in Virginia; and a DC Super Lawyer. Gary was also listed regularly in Virginia's Super Lawyers and Legal Elite. Gary co-authored and contributed to three books: Military Language, Military Justice, and Pediatric Lifecare Planning. Gary was the managing partner of Bromley, Brown and Walsh; the Fairfax office of Miles & Stockbridge; and was Chairman of the Board of McCandlish & Lillard. Gary was a Board Member of the Fairfax Salvation Army (where he volunteered regularly). His 50-year law practice involved representing both hospitals and physicians. His clients included Children's Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital in DC, and Fairfax Hospital in Virginia. Gary was the past co-president of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), and he was a past vestry member of The Falls Church Episcopal (in the late 1980's), and later joined The Falls Church Anglican. He was a Member of The National Academy of Trial Lawyers. Late in his career he became a Board member of the Claude Moore Foundation (a non-profit charity that manages real estate investments to support its charitable giving in support of educational endeavors). This he absolutely loved. Gary was beloved by everyone he ever met, and truly loved being a grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Alice; two sons, Marc (Sherri Brown) and Josh; three grandchildren, Katie, Kelly and Jack; sister, Freda Tanner (Charles Tanner); and niece, Shantell Tanner. So very sad to hear about the loss to the Brown family. I always enjoyed working with Mr. Brown. He was always very calm and dignified in the making of the record in proceedings and a pleasure to talk to off the record. Always very caring. He will be missed.

Gary was among the most gracious gentlemen I have had the pleasure to know. A pillar of the Virginia and D.C. defense bar, and a generous, guiding influence to many. My sincerest condolences.

The scope of this man's life is simply breathtaking - and the excellence with which he came to model life for the rest of us, was evident early on. From a dusty street in Picher, Ok., Gary Brown first demonstrated the kindness, gentleness, and exceptional intellect which continued to inform his life. This day, those of us who first knew and came to love him - we of the dusty streets of Picher, Ok. - salute his life, memory...and reflect upon the wonderful meaning which he added to our lives. Deepest condolences to his family.
