HOWARD BUSHMAN Obituary

BUSHMAN HOWARD MARSHALL BUSHMAN attorney and longtime resident of McLean, Virginia passed away on May 28, 2016 at the age of 70. Howard was born June 19, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri to Leonard and Tama Bushman. He graduated from Murray State University and from the University of Missouri-Columbia Law School. Following graduation from law school in 1970, Howard served in the U.S. Army, within the Judge Advocate General''s Corps, at Fort Riley and the Pentagon. He was committed to the U.S. Army remaining in the Army Reserve until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2005. Howard continued to serve in his commitment to the Army by providing gratuitous advice to soldiers, their families, and veterans on legal matters and family challenges. He did this without fanfare or promotion, but with sincerity as to what might be in their best interest. As an attorney, Howard furnished sound legal advice and counsel to 10 former Chief of Staff''s of the Army, several U.S. Supreme Court justices and one Secretary of State. He was a licensed attorney in the Commonwealth of Virginia, State of Missouri and admitted to practice before the United State Supreme Court, United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S Court for Military Appeals, U.S. Tax Court and U.S. Court of Claims. In addition, Howard served on the Board of Directors of Potomac Bank of Virginia. Following Potomac Bank''s acquisi- tion by Sandy Spring Bank in 2007, he served as a member of Sandy Spring''s Northern Virginia Advisory Board until his death. An avid sports fan, Howard was a lifelong fan of his St. Louis Cardinals and had worked at Sportsman''s Park. He served on the board of directors and was legal counsel to the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league franchise, the Alexandria Dukes (now the Potomac Nationals). He was a long time member of the Stan Musial Society, Society of Baseball Research (SABR) and Baseball Hall of Fame. Howard also served on the board and coached at McLean Little League and was a former President of the McLean High School Booster Club. He always enjoyed taking in a game no matter the sport and maintained season tickets for his hometown Washington Redskins and Nationals. In recent years, Howard provided his services to the creation of the U.S. Army Museum, as the secretary to the Army Historical Foundation. He remained engaged with the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), Military Order of the Carabao and Knollwood Military Retirement Community. He gave willingly to the Big Red One Society and sponsored events at the 1st Infantry Division Memorial in Washington, DC on Memorial and Veteran''s Day. He was a member of Kemper-Macon Ware Masonic Lodge #64 and Temple Rodef Shalom. In his free time, he enjoyed Nationals baseball games, cigars, and the view from the condo deck in Colonial Beach, Virginia. Howard is survived by his mother, Mrs. Tama Bushman of St. Louis, Missouri; his wife, Mrs. Betty J. Bushman of McLean, Virginia; his four children, LTC John M. Bushman of Alexandria, VA, Mr. Jeff L. Bushman of San Diego, CA, Ms. Sarah E. Bushman of Arlington, VA and Mr. Joshua E. Bushman of Alexandria, VA; and his grandson, Mr. Jay V. Bushman of McLean, VA. He has two sisters, Mrs. Gloria Schwartz and Mrs. Wendy Wax, of Chesterfield, Missouri. The viewing is scheduled for June 7, 2016 at Murphy''s Funeral Home in Arlington between 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Service and burial at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the U.S. Army Historical Foundation at: https://armyhistory.webconnex.com/ armydonatearmydonate

Howard was not only a good attorney who helped me and my family through difficult times when my husband was killed but was a true friend. Later Howard helped me to set up my business and, somehow, I always felt better just knowing he was there should we need him...and he was! That is the kind of professional and friend that he was to all of his "military family." May you, the Bushman family find comfort knowing that so many respected and cared for him and are now caring and praying for you during this deeply difficult time.

To John and all the Bushman family please receive our condolences at the passing of Howard. Brad let me know just yesterday or we would have surely come to the viewing to pay our respects. Thinking of Howard brings back many memories of Little League in McLean and raising our families. It was a special time for us and we treasure the friendships forged during those years. Howard was a giant of a man and we send our prayers to the family. Jerry & Sharyn Regier for all the Regier Family. Ashburn, VA

Seems impossible to believe Howard will no longer be part of our Real Estate Community in Arlington. I'll miss that "twinkle in his eyes" and his ability to always see the "bigger picture." I have many happy memories sitting around the settlement table with Howard at the funny old office on Wilson Blvd. My sympathy to the Bushman family. Well Done, Howard

Howard, was so helpful to me when Tom passed away. But as we sorted through Tom's law practice, I remember that he would occasionally mention his love for baseball, and proudly speak of his grandson. His office held reminders of what was very important to him, including Army memorabilia, pictures of his family and of course baseball. Although a very accomplished lawyer himself, he would tell me that he had such admiration and respect for Tom's legal mind. He was a kind man and I respected his legal advice. He was a friend.
Rest in Peace Howard.

Howard, I miss you already. I miss the advice and kindness you showed me
The last 16 years. I miss your sense of humor, your calmness in bringing us together when we had 14 different ideas, as president of the HOA you brought us together. It was a pleasure and honor to work with you.
All of us at St John's are your "other family".
RIP my dear friend. Love you.

I went to law school at the University of Missouri with Howard, and then kept in touch with him sporadically over the years. He was always in good humor and engaging. He enjoyed his law practice, spoke fondly and affectionately of his family, and was a friend to people from all walks of life. He was a patriot and justifiably proud of his affiliation with the U.S. Army. My condolences to his family on their loss.--CAVM

So sorry to hear about Howard. He wasn't just a law school classmate but a good friend during those years at MU. Howard was an inquisitive and serious law student. I remember him joining in many informal study groups. I'm sure I can speak for other classmates and say how proud we are of his many professional accomplishments. Nolen Berry, J.D. 1070.

Howard and I were classmates at the University of Missouri School of Law and at the Army JAG School at the University of Virginia. I lost contact with Howard after his move to Virginia, but remember him as a fun loving guy and someone who was interesting to be around. Condolences to Howard's family from Doug & Julia Evans and family.

Howard Bushman was my friend, my military colleague and from time to time my personal lawyer. Howard loved the Army; he frequently reached out to members of the Army family who needed professional or personal help. Howard was a leader of the "Old Fuds" group of retired Army JAG officers. I doubt if he ever missed a local memorial service for a fallen member of the Army family. We will miss you, Howard. We pray that God will welcome you to his eternal home.

I never started a conversation with Howard without being clear headed and on my tip toes. He had sharp intellect, keen wit, subtle insights, and (frequently) not so subtle thoughts - - all to be admired and respected. Wrapped around it all was an incredible generosity and loyalty. I will miss you, Howard!

I send my sincere condolences to the Bushman family. I only spent a couple of years as a neighbor of Howard & Betty, in 1971 & 1972, when I was a young Marine and Howard was on active duty in the Army. We lived in a high rise building on Columbia Pike and I thought you guys were such a wonderful young couple. I still remember how much I enjoyed taking with you two. It has been more than 40 years, but, I never forgot you guys Betty and I was very saddened to hear about Howard's passing. Rest in Peace Howard, I know your family will miss you dearly and I sent my deepest sympathy.

Sincerely,

Gil Lynch
