Rest in heaven Ella, what a servant, it's a true testament that after all these years since your passing when I enter the First Baptist Church of Glenarden I still remember your service as an usher. Phelps family Ella truly earned her crown and I know she is wearing it well. The impact she left on my life will never be forgotten, your sister in Christ from FBCG.

I just wanted to say that Ms. Ella was partly responsible for my coming back to vist FBCG back in September of 2003. I became a member 2 months later. I came to bible study for the first time in September 2003 and there were no more seats in the sanctuary. Ms. Ella directed me to the over flow room. I went to the overflow, found a seat and was very content with where I was sitting. At the very start of the service Ms. Ella came back to the overflow room to tell me she found a seat for me in the sanctuary. So, I went with her and the seat was in the second row from the front. It impressed me because there were many people at bible study and in the overflow room. In addition, it was kinda of dark in there and Ms. Ella had never seen me before, but she came looking for me anyway. I thought she was humerous and sincere.

Mrs. Ella, a one of a kind lady. I didn't know you personally, I was just a familiar face in FBCG. But you always had a smile and a kind word for me whenever I saw you. You made me feel welcomed. And I would be remiss if I didn't say thank you, I will miss you. Rest in Peace.
My condolences to the family and close friends. What a privilege you had to know and love her! Remember all she taught you and what she stood for and though she is gone physically, she will remain with you in your heart. God Bless

I am so saddened to just here this. There will never be another usher like Ella Phelps at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. When I came to church a couple of weeks ago and didn't see you I felt like something was wrong. But I didn't ask anyone where you were. Your presence will be sorely missed. How much you impacted me. You are among the angels now. My sincere condolences are with the family at this time.

Dearest Ms. Ella,
Although I have never met you personally, I feel like I've known you for years. You've meant so much to my mom and she spoke of you often..very often. She spoke of "her Ella Bell" in most conversations revolving around jokes, laughs, Avon, and food! You began as her "Avon lady" and was quickly transformed into her friend. When I was away at college, mom would make me order things from your Avon books. You probably never knew this but she was not really into Avon much...she was only into you! Supporting you meant the world to my mom! I am sure that there were many days that you were her motivation to come to work because she could look forward to a wonderful lunch, lots of laughs, and lots of TALKING! Yes, my mom loves to talk as much as you!
I honor you because you taught my mom so much about life and love. You taught her so much about total surrender to God and trusting Him with everything. You taught my mom about giving...the true giving that comes from your heart. I remember her telling me stories of how you gave so much of yourself to help others. One time she spoke of how you gave your car to help another. WOW! I thank you because I also felt your influence through my mom. A happy, well-fed mother equals a happy daughter as well!
It meant the world to my mom to have the privilege of spending your last days with you, serving you in any way she could. You requested her presence, out of everyone you knew and that speaks volumes of the love and friendship you all shared. I called her every evening just to get the "Ella Bell" updates and to see how you were doing. Mom and I prayed for you and for your peace. We are comforted knowing that you have all the peace and love you could ever desire now with God.
Say Hi to my Grandma up there! You and her would make good friends...maybe even start a contest in heaven to see whose up-side down pineapple cake tastes the best...lol
I Love you Ms. Ella.
Sincerly,
Dr. Monea Abdul-Majeed (daughter of Renea Hendricks)

I am shocked and saddened by the loss of Ms. Ella. I met Ella at a friends house that sang in the choir with me at FBCG. I always picked at Ella about how the ushers would throw their fingers up and how they would seat people. We also joked about Mr. Charles, whom we called "Big C." Ms. Ella, you will definitely be missed. I love you and thank you for befriending me along your life's journey. To the family, please be encouraged by knowing that Ella was a very special lady, who touched alot of lives. She was beautiful! Rest in peace my dear friend...

I have just learned of the passing of Mrs. Ella and I am truly in shock right now. I had the pleasure of meeeting her at the SEC a few years ago and she was one of those people you loved to be around. She would stop by with her Avon books and also invite us to lunch that she would cook up. What a wonderful wonderful person, gone to soon. Another angel gone to Heaven. May you Rest in Paradise, Mrs. Ella

March 2, 2012
Ms. Ella has a special place in my heart and in the hearts of those who knew her. I have never met Ms. Charles but I heard a great deal about him during the three years I spent at the SEC. Even while complaining, her love for him was evident.
Her love for Him was likewise evident, even to those not then inclined to "hear" or "see" how His work was being effected through His handmaiden, Ms. Ella.
That her death should bring forth, even in this guestbook, such expressions of love is itself telling tribute to her earthly life. May her memory be eternal.

Rest In Peace Ella. You have truly touched so many lives.
I'm safely home in Heaven,
Though I know you miss me so.
The love I've alway's felt for you,
within my heart still flows.
My spirit will remain with you
every single day, appearing as a
rainbow or as ocean waves at play.
I'm in the gentle rains that fall,
and in the morning dew.
All you see that's beautiful
reflects my love for you.
I didn't mean to cause you pain,
my time had simply come.
The work that I was meant to do
on earth had all been done.
I'm safely home in Heaven,
where eternal peace is mine.
And where, when God has called you,
too, I'll be forever Thine.

I was lucky to work with Ella when I first started at the Commission. She kept a watchful eye over all of the young accountants, analysts and attorneys in our group and kept us all in line. Besides typing our comment letters and keeping the work flowing, Ella excelled at cooking, storytelling and even matchmaking. She kept tabs on us long after we moved to other offices, always remembering the names and ages of our children. I'll miss Ella's warm heart and fun-loving nature. My sincere sympathy to Ella's family.

Ella was awesome! I had the joy of working with Ella for a little over 2 years in the banking group of the Division of Corporation Finance at the SEC. She was kind, thoughtful and positive. She shared her faith through her actions and her words. There was never a day when Ella did not show kindness and courtesy. She made a difference in my life and the lives of many people. Without question, her life on this Earth was significant. Much love, peace and hope to Ella's family as they recognize her legacy and celebrate her life knowing she is now in the presence of God, through her relationship with Christ Jesus surrounded by the perfect love of the Holy Spirit! Ella, I stiill can't believe you're gone so soon. You were one of my very best friends during my years ar Smooth Jazz 105.9 in Washington DC, through the launch of Smooth Jazz America Radio and up through my current position as Station Manager of 88.1 WHOV in Hampton, Virginia.. The way you used to practically run to me when we saw each other in church at FBCG brought a big smile to my face and made my heart sing. You were truly my BIGGEST FAN! My heart is still aching from losing you and I hope the tears I shed upon hearing the news were felt as you transition to be with our heavenly father. Although previous commitments will not make it possible for me to be at your homegoing, know that I love you and will continue to strive for success because I know you'd expect nothing less. Ms. Ella, as she was affecttionately known, will truly be missed by me and my husband. One Sunday during service we told her about our up coming nupitals and she started dancing and smiling to the point my husband called her his dancing usher. I have missed ushering with her and talking to her on the phone during day when we both should be working. She had a spirit/smile that would light up a room and a gift for gabbing (smile). To her son, John, thank you for allowing me to spend time with you mom 2 weeks ago; I was looking forward to visiting her this Friday. Charles thank you for sharing Ella with me at church and on the phone. The Angels are rejoicing and she is bending the Lord's ear (smile). We know God is in control and has His loving arms around the family to comfort them during this difficult time. Our prayers are with you now and always.

Ella was one of the secretaries in the banking group when I first started at the SEC out of law school in '88. And Ella ran the place. With her great wit, she was always entertaining us. Her desk geographically was in the center of the group - so you joked around constantly with Ella throughout the day. But more importantly, Ella spoke to all of our loved ones as this was in the era before voicemail (and computers) and she knew more about our personal lives than we did! For a while, I dated someone down in Chapel Hill and Ella - hailing from North Carolina - got to know her so well that they remained friends even after we broke up! I remember Ella telling many loving stories about her husband Charles and her two children, as well as her fabulous cooking adventures. She will be missed.
