EVA C. TOPPING (Age 91)
Of Fredericksburg, VA, formerly of McLean, VA passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at her residence. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, December 18 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with a Trisagion service at 4 p.m. A service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, December 19 at the Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, 12326 Spotswood Furnace Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407. Eva was a dear friend and respected elder for young Greek-Americans. Many times during my life she served as a source of inspiration and affirmation and as someone I tried to emulate. She shared her love of books and ideas and her support of liberal causes with those of us growing up in the midwest who generally only heard reactionary ideas from elders.
We were very glad to have had a chance to visit her during the last couple years and to renew our friendship. On our last visit she made us gifts of a number of carefully chosen books that we will always treasure.

Writer, historian, first woman permitted to lecture at the Greek Orthodox Holy Cross Seminary, Brookline,MA, first woman to propose that women be allowed in the Orthodox priesthood, Eva Catafygiotu Topping was a voice for women in Orthodoxy. She was kindness personified to family,relatives, friends and to many Clergy.
Eva and Peter W. Topping were the ultimate scholars, their home a haven for books and learning. Their passing diminishes our world.
Eva left a mark at Mary Washington College in Virginia and Radcliff-Harvard and the University in Athens, Greece.
