JAMES SWEENEY Obituary

SWEENEY James Patrick Sweeney (Age 60) Of McLean, VA., formerly of Sioux City, IA, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018. Services were held on Saturday, May 5, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Jim was born on February 14, 1958, in Sioux City, the son of James E. and Joan Sweeney. Jim grew up in Sioux City. A standout athlete, he walked on at Iowa State University's football program, eventually earning a full-ride scholarship. Following Iowa State University, Jim received a master of business administration degree from the University of South Dakota, a master of taxation degree from Drake University, and a doctor of business administration/accounting degree from Nova Southeastern University. At the time of his death, Jim resided in McLean, and Trinity, FL. He was a partner at RSM US LLP, and the National Leader of Exempt Organization Technical Tax Services practice, serving some of the nation's and world's largest and most name recognizable tax-exempt organizations. Jim once sat on a committee that translated the Internal Revenue Code to Congress. He also provided tax return review and technical substantiation for vice presidential candidates. Jim was the co-author of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Not-for-Profit Tax Compliance program, as well as an adjunct professor and technical lecturer at many colleges and universities. Jim loved his wife of 20 years, Lynn, of Trinity; his proud parents, James E. and Joan of Sioux City; and his sisters, Teresa (James) Niederhauser of West Des Moines, Lisa Rossi of Sioux City, and Kristina (Raymond) Smalling of Seattle, WA; as well as 10 nieces and nephews; one grandniece; and one grandnephew. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clifford and Pearl Sweeney of Sioux City, and Achim and Mary Simon of Sioux City.
