LEWIS RAY SANFORD (Age 89)
On Thursday, September 14, 2017, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of the late Claire Shields Sanford; father of Lewis R. (Peg) Sanford, Jr. and Terry Sanford (Jeff) Hinds; grandfather of Lauren and Amanda, Kelley (Mike) and Matt, Marc (Jennie) and Kate (Chris); great-grandfather of Stella and Declan; brother of Earl (Joann) and Grady (Marty) Sanford. Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), on Tuesday, September 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. with a brief service at 3 p.m. Private interment, Gate of Heaven Cemetery. www.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.com

He was my collleague and best friend in the chemistry dept at Walter Johnson Senior H.S.from 1959-1965. We shared ownership of a rowboat, the "Rita Claire" for several years, which we used to go fishing. Never caught anything, but had a lot of fun together. He was my closest buddy and I shall sorely miss him.

Ray was my colleague, as well as a good friend. Together we taught chemistry at Walter Johnson senior high school from 1959 until I left in 1965. He was an excellent teacher, and a true gentleman. I shall miss him. C.H. Breedlove

Ray was a kind and general man. A wonderful father to his children and grandchildren. Always had interesting stories and loved his fish and gardening. He was a great part of all of our lives. Terry and Lewis I'm so sorry for this loss. MY love to the both of you.
