CHACOS DEMETER CAROL C. DEMETER July 16, 1949 - February 22, 2009 Carol Ann Chacos Demeter (formerly Cary), a resident of 4 Pineway Drive, Auburn, Maine died unexpectedly on February 22, 2009 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She was 59. Carol was born at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. on July 16, 1949, the daughter of Theresa and Nicholas Chacos. As a young girl, Carol lived in Washington, D.C. and began her education at the Sacred Heart School. When Carol was nine the family moved to Bethesda, Maryland where she attended Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School graduating in 1963 and Immaculata High School graduating in 1967. Lifelong friends remember her teachers at Lourdes warmly calling her "talking Chacos" and that Sister Mary Claire, the principal at Immaculata, liked to call her "Carol Chaos." She then attended Villanova University in Pennsylvania and Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland where she was both a student and worked in the theater department from 1969 to 1978. Carol was an exceptionally creative and talented person. After leaving college she continued to be active in local theater acting as costumier and costume mistress for a number of theaters in the Washington area during the late 1970s. These theaters included the Shady Grove Music Fair in Gaithersburg, Maryland and the Harlequin Dinner Theater in Rockville, Maryland. In addition to her involvement in theater at that time, Carol purchased an old farm house in Mt. Airy, Maryland which she extensively renovated while simultaneously co-founding and managing a craft store. Later she moved into a house in Rockville, Maryland which she also enjoyed renovating in her spare time. Her additions to the house included an elaborate tree house for her son, perched in a massive old oak in the backyard. During the ensuing years she was involved with close friends in catering and floral design businesses, founded her own cake decorating business and frequently designed and redesigned bridal gowns and bridesmaids'' dresses for families throughout the area. It was while living in Rockville that Carol was introduced to Grady Management, Inc. by a close friend. In the early 1980s, Grady Management was searching for a problem solving person with varied talents and experience and Carol was introduced as the perfect candidate. She started in the Silver Spring Corporate office on November 13, 1983 and undertook many roles over the years including Computer Operator and Assistant for Computer Operations between 1985 and 1987. Later, she was named Special Projects Coordinator and Secretary for the Commercial Division. During this period Carol returned to Montgomery College, completing her Associate''s Degree in 1985. In 1988 Carol moved to Takoma Park, Maryland where she had purchased another home and, as she loved to do, renovated it by installing arched doorways, a circular staircase and many other unique features. In April of 1991, the Marauder Historical Society, of which her father was then Chairman, held its 50th anniversary reunion in Baltimore Maryland. Always giving of her time, Carol took on the task of managing the PX for the duration of the event. In September 1994, Carol moved to Maine as Regional Manager of Grady Management''s Maine Portfolio. Carol was still in this position when she passed away. Upon moving to Maine, Carol continued to apply her theatrical talents with the Public Theater in Lewiston, an activity which she enjoyed for 15 years. Throughout a life of kindness and generosity she lent her many skills, boundless energy and love to the countless gifts she provided for her extended family and friends. These included custom-made clothing, professional quality window treatments, handmade quilts, and elegant, delicious wedding cakes. She was currently in the process of working with her brother to design an exhibition featuring virtual tours of the solar system for first and second graders. While living in Maine, she became a member and officer of AROK Temple #4 Daughters of the Nile and President of the Nile Club which raises funds for Shriners Children''s Hospitals. An avid cribbage player, Carol was also a member of the Martindale Cribbage League.
