HARING ELLEN STONE HARING The Beginning Ellen was born in Los Angeles, California to her parents, Rear Admiral Earl E. Stone and Eleanor Newton Prichard Stone on December 5, 1921. She attended primary and secondary schools in Los Angeles and Washington, DC where she attended Sidwell Friends School. Ellen was the great granddaughter of Isaac Newton, the first United States Commissioner of Agriculture under the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Ellen is a descendant of Sir Isaac Newton the physicist whose family came to this country with William Penn and settled in Pennsylvania. Education Ellen graduated from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania receiving her Baccalaureate Degree in Philosophy. As a true trailblazer and academician, Ellen was one of the first generation of women to obtain a Doctorate in Philosophy from Harvard University. Professional Career Ellen taught Ancient Greek Philosophy at Wellesley College in Massachusetts for many years, and served as the Department of Philosophy's Chair. During the final years of her career, Ellen settled in Gainesville, Florida, serving for several years as the Chair of Philosophy for the University of Florida. Upon retirement she was declared Professor Emerita; in Ancient Philosophy. Union Ellen met Philip Haring at Harvard University and became his wife. There were no children from this union. Home going On Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 3:35 p.m. in the afternoon, Ellen was called home to God's eternal rest. She peacefully submitted with her godson Thomas J. Dawson III and his wife Natisha A. Dawson there at her bedside. Ellen lived a full life where she was loved by many and certainly touched the lives of many more. Services will be private. Surviving Loved Ones Ellen will be deeply missed by her godson, Thomas J. Dawson III and his wife Natisha, her great-godson Thomas IV, Thomas J. Dawson Jr. and his wife Brenda and her very dear friends, Hilary and Ruth Anna Putnam and family, Amelie Rorty and Wendy Donner.Ellen will be deeply missed by her godson, Thomas J.
