I had just moved from the Midwest in 1971 to work for Congressman Gerald Ford. Lou and i lived in the same apartment building in southwest DC. I recall that he brought me a Christian Dior scarf from Paris. I was only 21. He was a kind and intelligent friend. I moved to California. Lou was a classy guy.

Dear Bobbie,
It's hard to believe that 5 years have passed since Lou left us. He is often in my thoughts. I hope you are doing well. Much love, Linda

Bobbie,
I just learned of Lou's death and want to extend my condolences to you and your family. I worked with Lou at NSF from about 1970-1985 and he was a tremendous source of support for me and our IDOE projects. I have many fond memories of Lou in WDC, Paris and London. He was a master at resolving conflicts at international meetings, one that I remember most fondly was at a WESTPAC meeting in Tokyo when the USSR delegates wanted to extend the WESTPAC region east of the dateline to include Pearl Harbor. Fortunately I could relax and watch Lou convince everyone that it was a bad idea.

I was saddened to learn today of Lou's passing and offer my sincere condolences to you, Bobby.
As you know, I worked with Lou for a number of years, shared an office, and developed a rapport with him. We traveled together to many places for diverse organizations but regardless of the mission, Lou was a constant source of ideas and support. The community and I will miss his friendship and his numerous contributions.

Dear Bobbie and Brown family,

We are thinking of you often during this very difficult time. Our hearts and prayers are with you.

February 22, 2015

Emily and I were very sorry to hear the sad news about Lou. We had known him for a long time, and have happy memories of oceanographic expeditions, trips to Paris, Tokyo, and many places in between. Lou taught me most of what I know about working in an international context - what color tie to wear, how to present a business card, and how to buy the best cognac in Paris! We were very happy to see his marriage to Bobbie. You both are in our thoughts now.

Cousin Bobbie,
Our condolences to you and the rest of the family on Lou's passing. Lou and you are often in our thoughts. Among our memories are these:
The two 19th Century woodblock prints now over our fireplace which Lou helped me buy in a little shop in Tokyo.
Shopping for antique home decor magazines with Lou in Paris.
Calvados and conversations at Lou's annual Jan. 2 party.
Watching Lou watch you at our wedding.
Your first trip to Paris.
The lively party the night before your wedding, complete with shotgun salutes and fully clothed surprise "midnight swims."
The socks stuffed under your bedroom door on your wedding night.

My deepest condolence on the passing away of our dear friend Mr. Louis Brown. He has been a prominent figure in Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) and helped in every possible way to take APN to greater height.

With a short few years of friendship, I felt he lived a great life, enjoying it. Though we know it (Death) is the only true fact, which is bound to happen, sometimes it is difficult to believe!

Missed you Lou.

Lou Brown was a great friend and colleague and the whole APN fraternity is going to miss him dearly. His contribution to APN over the years is immeasurable. If APN has attained such a high profile in the global change arena is because we were fortunate to have people like Dr Brown with such strong dedication and commitment to move APN steadily to greater heights. He used his vast experience working with the NSF to guide APN through the many institutional framework arrangements with an eye for all the fine details. His contributions will always be in our hearts. My deepest condolences to his family.

I met this sad information with great sorrow. Lou was really one of the key persons who had ideas of APN cooperation is his heart and in his mind, and was eager to carry them in life. We will miss him, but need to follow the things to which he was dedicated.

Dear Bobbie and family,

I want to send you my sincere condolences at the loss of Lou.

He was such a special person and I know you and your family will miss him
dearly.

Lou and I worked together for over 20 years and was privileged to call him a true friend. We shared some wonderful times (and meals) together in some amazing places
around the world.
Within the APN we will certainly miss his wisdom at the table but we will
not forget him. His
insights and experience have built the organisation to now be very strong
and this is his legacy.

I will miss him too!

Yours sincerely,
Andrew Matthews.

I have been working with Lou Brown for more than 20 years through my professional career. He has been always supporting our collaborative initiatives: APN, IGFA, START and other Global Change Programmes. I have been enlightened and encouraged by his insightful ideas and advices as well as his personality. We miss him very much, however, I am sure that the sprit he has extended to us will remain with us for ever.
I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family members.

I am really saddened by the passing away of Lou Brown. My deep condolence to Lou's family and may his soul rest in peace.
I knew Lou from 2006, the first time I joined a meeting of Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) in Jakarta, Indonesia. As one of the founding fathers of APN, I learned a lot from him about many things of APN. He was not only a good and friendly senior colleague, but also fully dedicated to APN. We will miss him greatly. With his dedication to APN for a very long time and warm friendship with all of APN members, he will always stay in our good memory.
