JOHN SHERMAN Obituary

SHERMAN Dr. John F. Sherman, PhD On June 28, 2015, passed away peacefully at home in Washington, DC. Survived by his daughter Betsy Sherman of Washington, DC and Mary Ann Small of Liverpool, England, two grandsons, Michael and Edward Small, and many friends and relatives. The Special Recognition Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) stated: (Dr Sherman) "was widely recognized as an unfailing friend of the biomedical research community throughout his distinguished career. To say that advances in biomedical research in the United States are due, in no small part, to his vigilant and consistent efforts is not an overstatement; indeed, generations of scientists have Dr. Sherman to thank for keeping the funding of biomedical research a critical issue on the agenda of national decision-makers. The respect and honors given to Dr. Sherman over the years are a testament to his enduring contributions to his most cherished cause - biomedical research." Born in Oneonta, NY in 1919, Dr. Sherman served in the 89th Division, US Army from 1941-46 and was awarded the Bronze Star for distinguished service, including the crossing of the Rhine. With assistance from the GI Bill, he earned a BS from Union University College of Pharmacy and his PhD from Yale University. Recruited to the National Institutes of Health as a research pharmacologist in 1953, he was quickly promoted to leadership roles, ultimately as Deputy Director and Acting Director. Dr. Sherman resigned as Deputy Director in 1974, stating a sense of discouragement and disillusionment with federal administration policies he felt were eroding the excellent quality of NIH, voicing a widely-held view amongst scientists at America's largest biomedical institution. His career continued at AAMC, serving as executive vice president until 1990 and then special consultant. He was a board member and founder of many national boards devoted to medical research who sought his sound advice and good counsel. He was a member of the Cosmos Club and was proud to serve in the Public Health Service achieving the rank of Rear Admiral. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 17 at Ingleside at Rock Creek, 3050 Military Rd. NW, Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Koop Living Legacy Fund, Public Health Service Commissioned Officers Foundation at phscof.org/giving. Dear Betsy, Mary Ann and family,

I thought about your Father and Mother the other day, and just how extraordinary they both were in our lives, and in the lives of so many others....I simply decided to look online, and saw your Father's obituary---I am so saddened, as my sister Loris is as well. Both of your parents were amazing human beings, and we have such wonderful and lovely memories of time spent at your home, with you all. My Mother and I adored your Mother; she was so very special. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, and your family. Peace be with you all---Much Love, Elaine and Loris (Jones)

Dear Betsey and Mary Ann,
Please know what a privilege it was to know your amazing father in his leadership role at the AAMC and following his retirement. His talent, intellect and humanity inspired everyone who was fortunate enough to to become his friend. I will be forever influenced by him as was my late husband, Nate. With sincere sympathy and deep appreciation, Linda Blank

Betsy and Mary Ann,
I just learned that your dad passed away. His achievements were remarkable. He also was a kind, compassionate person. He and Deane made such an
outstanding couple. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I feel so fortunate to have been a part of the Sherman-Murray family.
Love, Cheri

I never had the pleasure of meeting John but my husband Garvin thought very highly of him. I did meet his wife Deane who was a wonderful person.

I knew Dr. Sherman when we both worked at AAMC. He was so generous with his time and expertise, helping those of us more junior in our careers as if we were a special interest of his. A wonderful, wonderful man.
