I, too, remember The Hammer from my years at Navy Recruiting Command. I imagine that for years, many people who joined the Navy had read his words before making that important decision. Always a jolly fellow.

Hammerin' Hank -- 'Cause he could pound that IBM Selectric like nobody's business. A great writer and a terrific fellow, I first met Hank in 1976 when I went to work for Navy advertising. We often lunched together in those days, and Hank was a great story teller. From his days as a sports writer at two DC papers, his time as a"Spotter" at Redskin radio broadcasts and his youthful visits to Wildwood, NJ where he stayed at the same hotel I would later work, Hank told engaging, entertaining narratives. One of my favorite Hank adventures was the time he had written the bowling section for a book on Washington area sports. The publisher needed a photo for the jacket. We searched for one of those 50 cent photo booths that printed out a strip of three poorly lit portraits. We found it in a McCrory's five and dime. A half dollar and one minute later, he had what he needed. I haven't seen him since his going away luncheon in 1990. Glad to see that he enjoyed a 25 year retirement. Knowing Hank, I'd bet he savored every moment. Rest in peace old friend!

Henry was a most beautiful man, kind, generous....drssed with a smile and a infectious laugh. I so loved him.

We both knew Hank from Navy Recruiting Command and are sorry to learn of his passing. His quick wit, ready smile, and the sparkle in his eyes will not be forgotten. Thinking of him and all of you.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone during this time. My greatest memories are the vacations when everyone would gather together in Florida and just spend time together. I will always remember Uncle Henry's sense of humor and the times we all would get together. Our heart goes out to Aunt Louise and all. Gods grace and peace to you.

Deepest condolences to the Fankhauser family. I worked with Hank at Navy Recruiting in Arlington before he retired. Hank was a joy to be around and was immediately missed by his co-workers.
I have no doubt that God will bless Hank and grant him eternal life and happiness.
Sincerely,
Mike Campbell
