KAREN CARRA Obituary

Karen Carra
Karen Carra (54), of Takoma Park, MD died due to complications after a hang gliding accident at a site called High Rock in Cascade, MD on November 8, 2015. She, and her husband of nearly 30 years, had been flying hang gliders for over 20 years. Karen is also a paraglider pilot, SCUBA diver, rock climber, kayaker, skier, sailor, equestrian, polo player, hiker and, in general, a lover of the great outdoors. She summited Kilimanjaro in 2014 with her husband and a group of friends and has travelled throughout the world on a wide variety of adventures, such as SCUBA diving with sharks in the Bahamas, hiking the Inca Tail and horseback riding across Ireland. She grew up and gained her appreciation for nature in Harper's Ferry, WV and earned a BA in Philosophy from Mary Washington College in 1983. Karen danced for numerous local DC area companies during the 1980s and 1990s, which included a tour of Soviet Russia with Saint Mark's Dance Company. She regularly practiced yoga and Pilates- and over the last decade has turned her attention from dance to the aerial arts, such as silks and lyra. She has performed aerial works at the Atlas Theatre and the Shakespeare Theatre Sidney Harman Hall with Airborne! DC. And over the last couple years she has become a regular on the flying trapeze at TSNY DC. A vegetarian, Karen truly loved animals-adopting numerous cats, working on feline rescues, walking dogs at Washington Animal Rescue League and regularly riding her leased horse at Rock Creek Park Horse Center. While her daytime job was in database management, she also occasionally freelanced as a photographer. She has been published in the Washington Post, Washingtonian Magazine and numerous outdoor and travel publications. She will be missed by diverse groups of friends and family from all over this world. She is survived by her husband, Matthew Graham, her mother Twila and her older sister Michele. Her father Joseph Carra passed away at age 82 in 2014. She also leaves her five cats. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the Washington Animal Rescue League. Please view and sign the family guest book at www.pumphreyfuneralhome.com Information on a Celebration of Her Life will be updated at this site.

Once again, still so shocked and saddened by this. Karen was a truly remarkable person. She had so much talent and you could just see greatness. I am glad she got to do so many things in her life but sorry to see it shortened by this terrible accident. I wish her family all the best and comfort from this huge loss. Rest in peace, my friend.

Karen was one of the best math students I ever taught. I was lucky to be her teacher for three years---grade 7-9. The courses she made almost perfect grades in were Algebra I, Algebra II, and Advanced Math. She also took a course called Special Topics in Mathematics which met at lunchtime. She was an awesome person and greatly appreciated. I was so sorry when I read of her passing. She will be in my thoughts and never forgotten, especially when I remember my teaching career.

Karen was one of the best math students I ever taught. I was privileged to have her in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II at the junior high level at Charles Town W.Va. Junior High from 1974-1976. That gives you some idea of how bright she was. She was also a member of the first Special Topics in Mathematics class which met voluntarily at lunch time. This class took many field trips and Karen's mom was a wonderful chaperon for the class. I was not surprised to read of her many accomplishments. She was the type of student that made me love teaching. She was a very, very special student and person and my heart is greatly saddened by her passing. My prayers are with her mother, husband, sister, and all members of her family.

So sad to hear of Karen's death. Karen lived across the street from me while we were kids up until high school. She and I had great adventures together usually on horseback, hiking to the river and climbing the cliffs, spending the night in each others haylofts in the barn, swimming and climbing trees and camping with her parents. I have such fond memories of our times spent together! I lost touch with her after we both got married and I moved away, but I often thought of her whenever I went back home to visit. May Mrs. Carra, Michele, and Matthew all encounter God's peace in the days ahead.

Karen has been one of my best friends ever since she welcomed me into her life almost 30 years ago. Together with Matthew, and then with Kerry and then our boys too, we enjoyed active pursuits, enjoyment of the arts, and substantial conversations. Karen made a real difference in my life, and undoubtedly in those of her many, many friends. It has been a privilege to be part of her life. Words cannot fully express our feelings now. We will be here for Matthew and Karen's mother and sister.

I never met Karen (or Matt), but I heard about her magnificent Spirit from one of her neighbors in their Takoma Park community. Karen's light and vibrancy is so strong, that I too, perhaps a stranger in the flesh feel a loss in my own soul for a kindred spirit. My condolences go out to her family and to her various communities.
