HECLO HUGH HECLO Dr. Hugh Heclo, 74, of White Post, Virginia, died at Blue Ridge Hospice Care Center in Winchester on August 6, 2017. Dr. Heclo was born in Marion, Ohio, on March 10, 1943. He received the A.B. degree from George Washington University in 1965, the M.A. degree from Manchester University (England) in 1967 and his Ph.D. degree in political science from Yale University in 1970. A lifelong educator, he was a Clarence J. Robinson Professor at George Mason University from 1987 until retirement in June 2014. On retirement, by the unanimous consensus of his colleagues and the university administration, he was honored by being granted Professor Emeritus status. Prior to his professorship at GMU, Dr. Heclo was a professor of government at Harvard University and a former Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. He was an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Public Administration. He was a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1985-86 and served on the Scholars' Council advising the Librarian of Congress and the Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. In 2002 Dr. Heclo was honored by the American Political Science Association with the Gaus Award for lifetime achievement in the combined scholarly fields of public administration and political science. Dr. Heclo was the author or co-author of several books including On Thinking Insti- tutionally and Christianity and American Democracy. Additionally he was a Reagan scholar and was the author of many articles on the Reagan presidency. For more than 25 years, Hugh's spare time was spent on his beloved Christmas tree farm, Ashcroft Farm in Clarke County, Virginia. It was here that he was most at home outside of the classroom. Planting seedlings in the spring, shaping plump trees into Christmas shape in the summer and welcoming continuing generations to wander through the fields in December to find their perfect tree. Hugh is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverley Carole Heclo, and their daughter, Ashley Rebecca Heclo, son-in-law Marcus Berggren and brother-in-law Archer Dowdy and his family. A memorial service to commemorate the life of Dr. Hugh Heclo will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the Berryville Presbyterian Church, Berryville, Virginia with Rev. Emily Berman D'Andrea officiating. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the
