Edith Hiles Obituary

Edith "Joyce" Hiles

Edith "Joyce" Hiles, 84, Wausau, died Friday, September 12, 2014 at Wausau Manor.

Joyce was born July 25, 1930 in Crandon, WI to the late Millard and Zona (Kincaid) Deaton. She graduated from Laona High School and married George B. Hiles on May 15, 1948 in Wabeno. Together, Joyce and George were faithful members of St. Mark's Lutheran church helping start the new church and she was an active member of the Evangelism Committee bringing bread to new members. They enjoyed going on day trips with good friends Bert and Ruth. George died one day after their 60th wedding anniversary on May, 16, 2008.

Joyce was a private person who devoted her life to her son, George, granddaughters and family. In addition to having a great love for her family, she also loved animals throughout her life. In her younger years, she enjoyed cooking, crocheting, antiquing flowers and sewing. Joyce often cheered on the Wisconsin Badgers and loved the fall when she would watch the Green Bay Packers play.

Joyce is survived by her son, George W. (Susan) Hiles; granddaughters, Melissa (Daniel) Flees and Jennifer Hiles; great-granddaughter, Madelyn Flees; great-grandson, Elijah Flees; sisters, Z. Janis Sharnek and Jean (Gary) Kochenderfer; brother, Leon Deaton; many nieces and nephews and her beloved cats, Muffy and Abby. She is preceded in death by her brother, Gordon Deaton; sister-in-law, Rochelle Deaton; brother-in-laws, Don Sharnek and Frank Sharnek; and niece, Deborah Deaton.

Funeral services will be at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, September 17 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wausau. Reverend Bruce Lamont will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the time of services at the church. Entombment will be at Restlawn Mausoleum. Helke Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements; you may sign the family guestbook at www.helke.com.

I am very sorry for your loss. Joyce was a very kindhearted person. I lived next to her for a short time in Wausau. I loved visiting with her and listening to her stories. She and my youngest daughter (who now is 3) Penny had a very close bond. She was Penny's adopted Grandma Joyce while we were living in Wausau. God bless you Joyce. Thank you for being a friend and an adoped grandmother. You will be missed.
