Arthur Vahlkamp Obituary

Arthur H. "Artie" Vahlkamp, 90, of the Illinois Veterans Home, formerly of 1215 N. Seventh St., died Friday (May 20, 2011) in the home.

Artie was born Nov. 28, 1920, in Quincy, a son of Stephen J. and Theresa Schnetzler Vahlkamp. He married Norma Jean Stith on June 1, 1953, in Hannibal, Mo., and she survives.

Artie was assistant foreman at International Shoe Co. before serving in the 6th Infantry of the U.S. Army during World War II. After he returned from the war, he worked as a bartender for 25 years for Walter Terwelp and Chuck Monckton. Artie retired in 1970.

He attended St. Francis Grade School and Quincy High School.

He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Artie was also a member of the American Legion Chapter #37, the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 138, the Veterans of Foreign War Chapter 5129, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 32, National Association 6th Infantry Division, Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, the NRA and Ducks Unlimited.

Artie formerly volunteered at the Illinois Veterans Home, and coached Little League for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Norma, of Quincy; three sons, Michael "Mick" Vahlkamp, Marty (Nancy) Vahlkamp and Stephen C. (Sharon) Vahlkamp, all of Quincy; a brother, Robert Vahlkamp of Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Catherine (Harold) Spilker of Quincy; a special granddaughter, Anna Marie Vahlkamp, of Quincy; several grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank, Steve, Raymond and Lawrence Vahlkamp; and sisters, Helen Nelson, Marie Brinks and Clara Fries.

SERVICES: 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral home and at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Burial with military honors by American Legion Post 37 will be in Calvary Cemetery.

VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

MEMORIALS: St. Francis Grade School.

ARRANGEMENTS: Duker and Haugh Funeral Home.
