SHELBINA, Mo. -- Harold Bernard "Barney" Snider Sr., 89, of Shelbina, died at approximately 10:23 p.m. Thursday (April 28, 2011), in Hannibal Regional Hospital.
He was born July 4, 1921, in Lakenan, Mo., the son of Elma Yancey and Hazel Ruth Coleman Snider. He was the older of the two children. He met Awilda Finny at a "yard dance" in the fall of 1939 near Kendall, Mo. They were married June 21, 1942, in Shelbina at St. Mary's Catholic Church Parsonage. She preceded him in death on March 30, 2011.
He attended Kendall and Hightower grad schools and graduated from Shelbina High School with the Class of 1940.
In July 1942, Barney enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, and was stationed at Shaw Field, Sumter S.C., where he was an airplane mechanic.
Barney was in partnership with Dwain Snider at Snider Implement Company, and was engaged in farming. He had a dozer business and operated Snider Shop in Shelbina before retiring in 1999. He enjoyed trips to the Ozarks with his family, fishing on the Mississippi and boating on Mark Twain Lake.
Barney leaves behind a large family including six children, Harold (Bob) Snider Jr. and his wife, Frances, of Shelbina, Maurine Kay McElroy and husband, Roger, of Mendon, Ill., Dorothy Ann Poore and husband, Donnie, of Shelbina, Samuel Elma Snider and wife, Connie, of Shelbina, Daniel Stephen Snider and wife, Ida, of Ashland, Sarah Beth Bradley and husband, Jim, of Forsyth; one sister Nyla West of Shelbina; 14 grandchildren, Julie Ensor, Vicki Seals, Michael Poore, Bryan Lackey, Carrie Bennett, Cynthia Snider, Dayna Power, Melissa Buckman, Kimberly Snider, Christie Fisher, Eva Snider, Andrew Bradley, Beth Bradley, and Matt Greening; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter Suzanne Lea Snider Ervin; and a grandson Harold Bernard Snider III.
SERVICES: 2:30 p.m. today in the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home with Rev. Mr. Bernie Toll conducting. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Shelbina.
VISITATION: 12:30-2:30 p.m. today in the funeral home.
