Martha Arras Obituary

Martha Ffolliott Rich Arras, 80, of Eastham, MA, peacefully passed away at her beautiful home in Eastham, MA. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Arras of Eastham. She is survived by her sister Anne Lincoln Rich of Plymouth and her nephew Elijah David Lincoln Rich Langille of Plymouth. She is also survived by sons and daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and beloved friends who she cherished every day until her last moments. Martha Ffolliott Arras was born at Cape Cod Hospital something she was very proud of as she would state, I am a true Cape Codder. Marthas family left Wellfleet when she was five and moved to North Weymouth, when she was in the first grade and started taking dancing lessons. Martha would share that, I can never remember a time when I wasnt singing, dancing, or in shows. The family moved to Cohasset when she was 12. Marthas mother would drive her to dance lessons after school in Boston. When she was 13, she was supposed to dance in a TV show in Boston, but they also wanted her to sing. They brought in an instructor who helped Martha develop an uncommon huge womans voice. The instructor recorded her doing German lieder at the Boston Opera House on stage, with the microphone way out in front of the of the stage. She has amazing projection. When Martha was 15, she moved to Manhattan to attend the American Theater Wing on a voice scholarship. Martha, a gifted singer and dancer, became a Radio City Rockette at the age of 16, as well as becoming the first Rockette to also be a vocal soloist. Martha did her first Broadway show, Hit The Trail, when she was 18, under her maiden name of Martha Rich. She did a national tour in Damn Yankees with Gwen Verdon, followed by a national tour in Pajama Game, which was extremely successful. As a result of her work in Pajama Game in Las Vegas, she was asked to stay on and sing in a Jazz group. They went on to do a USO tour in Alaska, the same tour Bob Hope used to do. She thought it was a wonderful experience. Upon returning to Vegas, Martha sang jazz at three venues: the Sahara in Vegas, Harrah's Lake Tahoe and Harrah's Reno. She met and worked with artists like Red Skelton, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin and Judy Garland during those years. She performed dancing with the legendary Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Martha returned to Cape Cod in 1976. Martha played Rose in Gypsy in 1984 for John Kelly, who owned the Academy of the Performing Arts in Orleans. She also danced with Naomi Turner in the Viva Dance Company. Martha was a faithful and devoted friend of Bill W, where her life of love and giving hope to others continued. Martha worked at the Orleans Convalescent Center as Activities Director until 1998. She always derived her greatest happiness from working with people, even when she retired and became a volunteer. She co-founded the Rocking Chair Rhythm band with her mother, Sarah Rich. This group took part in the 4th of July Parade every year for about 30 years. A memorial service will be held on April 21,2017 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel in the Pines in Eastham. Dear Sis,

I have waited till now to speak. Words have been there but they were some how silenced by the perpetually motion of moments that both proceeded and followed your passing.

Today, I put some flowers at your headstone in the cemetery. I continue as every Memorial Day since I was little, to take care of our parents and grandparents stone on the south shore. This time it is harder for me.
I recall, I would call you and we would talk about what kind of flower choices to make for Memorial Day. Off I would go to plant and prune. Then send you a picture. You would call and in your sisterly way say "Perfect"!

How it feels surreal to have placed them on your grave sis. It's a wound that is deeper for me somehow. I stop and take in the moment, breath and as I placed the flowers on the ground amongst the singing birds, I could almost hear your voice, your laugh. I listen to your voice mails now and then to hear you and feel the smile it brings to my face.

There hasn't been a day I haven't thought about your smile, that contagious smile and laugh. I could pick your unique out as soon as I walked through any door. Your sense of humor was unique and un chaIllenged. You were funny at times, without meaning to be...but you would be the first to laugh at yourself !I've familiarized myself with your smile and laugh for so many years.

Nothing can ever touch or remove the memories of you my courageous, sensitive, kind and fiesty sister. My hope is that you truly knew just how much you were loved by not only your family but so many countless others. How much good you did in your life and the many lives you touched with your generosity, wisdom and strength.

In every letter we wrote, every phone call, we always said, "I love you." Your comment was always the same with everyone you had a relationship with. I can still hear you say "Love You" and the reply would always be the same back to you "love you too".

I will miss the sound of your snare drum at the Rocking Chair Rhythm Band rehearsals and your all to familiar calling out "Wacka Do, Wacka Do"!
In conclusion, The memories of moments and sounds, laughter, music, mash, and your laugh will flood my heart always will last for eternity. Thank you for these gifts. I love you.

From my heart---to yours, in Gods arms,

Sis

We were deeply saddened to learn of our neighbor Martha's passing. It had been a great pleasure over many years to have her and Robert nearby. At the same time we can commemorate a full life, well-lived, with a spectacular career in song and dance with the greatest luminaries in the golden age of entertainment, followed by a second, retirement career of community service. We are all diminished by your absence, Martha. We will miss you. -- The Lamperti family

Love is patient and kind
Love is not jealous or boastful
It is not arrogant or rude
Love does not insist on it's own way
It is not irritable or resentful
It does not rejoice at wrong
But rejoices in the right
Love bears all things believes all things hopes all things endures all things.
And so it is so that we hold onto the hope that we shall see one another one day.
Thank you Martha for your love and kindnesses your gentle hugs, and booming laughter- may your soul rejoice at the presents of our Lord- as you dance your way into heaven. You are greatly missed.

The choirs of angels have greeted you,
I'm sure many dancing with delight.
You have reunited with family and friends
Who have taken this journey before you
You are home to your eternal home dear friend,
And are now in the arms of our Lord,
He has enfolded you with His mercy.
We will miss you and thank you
For being a light in our lives.
As Seneca once said,
The day which we fear as our last
Is but the birthday of eternity.
Happy Birthday Martha!
