Herbert Olsen

Mr. Herbert Olsen, 89, formerly of Orleans and recently of Bermuda Run, NC, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2015. He was born November 22, 1925 in Denmark to Christen Kjar and Ingefred Jensen Olsen. Herbert is survived by his wife Bobbie Bynum Olsen; a son, David Olsen and wife Diane of Lewisville, NC; a daughter, Lisa Kirkland M.D. and husband Daniel of Bel Air, MD; five grandchildren, Emma Rose, Sophie and Benjamin Olsen and Alexander and Nicholas Kirkland; a sister, Ruth Olsen Johnson and husband Axel; a sister-in-law, Vickie Olsen Michael and several nieces and nephews. Herb was a decorated WWII Navy veteran, graduated from Union College, earned a masters degree from Columbia University, had a distinguished 43-year career in the National Park Service, most notably as Superintendent of the Cape Cod National Seashore, and retired as Chief of Cultural Resources for the North Atlantic Region of National Parks. In retirement, Herb was a Governors appointee to the Cape Cod Commission, served on the board of directors of the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, and volunteered at the Lower Cape Outreach Council. He and his wife were also longstanding members of the Orleans United Methodist Church. Herb was a loving family man who dedicated his life to helping people, animals and the environment.
