Jeanne Gray Obituary

Jeanne Kendall Gray passes away on June 8, 2016 at Cape Regency, Centerville, MA. Thank you to the Brookside staff and Hospice for their loving care. Born April, 1, 1928 she grew up in Buffalo, NY she was the daughter of the late Ruth A. (Tennant) & Clarence E. Gray and beloved sister of the late Sally Mendes of Osterville, Peggy Gray of Buffalo, NY, Daniel Gray of Weston, MA, and Ruth Brounoff of Dallas, TX. She is survived by nieces and nephews; Suzanne Payne, Katherine Gray, Greta Duran, Daniel Brounoff, and Zelman Brounoff. Jeanne graduated from Bennell High School and the Boston Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts, majoring in painting and drawing, minoring in etching, woodcut prints, and design. She studied under the artist Kaji Aso. She lived in Brookline, prior to Cape Cod, where she was well known for her artwork, riding her bicycle, and her loving, generous, positive attitude. She was an avid fan of the Red Sox and elephants. Jeanne taught watercolor at the Brookline Art Center, and at the Boston Center for Adult Education. She also gave private lessons in her studio, had a small graphic arts business, and served on the board of directors at The Cultural Center of Brookline. She took students to France in 2003 and has had various exhibit showings. Her artwork, which can be seen in many locations in the Brookline area, is very diverse and an example of her creative mind. They include still life's, abstracts, Brookline parks, a tribute to NASA's "Challenger" explosion, and the Boston Public Garden (prints available). A memorial service will be held July 26 at 11 a.m. For more information, call (508)771-6625. For online condolences, visit www.doanebealames.com

Jeanne was a mentor, colleague, and friend of my student and baby-step professional times in late-1970's Boston. Her homes in the South End and Brookline, and the people she gathered around her, were oases of light, laughter and culture for a young man beginning to make his way.
I am saddened to hear of her passing. I treasure the work she gave me as a parting gift when I left Massachusetts, and I will cherish her memory.
