Herbert Kiser Obituary

Herbert H. Kiser died peacefully at his residence with family by his side on March 2, 2012. Born January 20, 1921 in Shippenville, PA, he was 91 years old. He graduated from Penn State University in 1941 with a BS in electro-chemical engineering; he received his MS in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949. Mr. Kiser married Eltie Gertrude Smith of Scranton, PA on July 5, 1948, and was devoted to her for rest of his life. They raised six children: Nancy Kiser of Seattle Washington; Martha Boardman of Middleburg, VA; John D. Kiser, of Nashua NH; Beverly Kiser of Staunton, VA; James Kiser of Hampden, ME; and Barbara Kiser of Vienna, VA. As a Captain in the US Army, Herb served his country with pride in the Pacific Campaign of the Second World War. While stationed in occupied Japan, he was responsible for the reestablishment of communication systems. Working for Raytheon and RCA as a civilian, he researched and designed radar systems for private and military uses. With the Budd Company, he was involved in the development of high-speed electric rail services and systems. Herb will be remembered most as a man devoted to his family and community. When his family lived in Southborough, MA, he coached his sons teams and served as president of the little league association. There, he annually climbed the Community House tree to hang Christmas lights to the joy of the town. In Ambler PA, he focused on his flower and vegetable gardens, researching genealogy and creating hand-made furniture pieces for his family and friends. Mr. Kiser is survived by Eltie, his wife of more than 63 years, one sister, three brothers, six children, twelve grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Interment will be April 20th at 1:30 p.m. at the Indian Town Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA. The following day, April 21st, a memorial service will be held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Maple Glenn, PA at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mr. Kisers memory: Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939.
