Joel Benton Obituary

Joel Peter Benton, 56. After a year-long and truly courageous fight with cancer, Joel left this world on the morning of 25 February, at home with his wife Laura at his side. In his final days he cherished the companionship of his brother Chip and many loyal and loving friends. Joel moved from Connecticut to Wellfleet in his early teens and graduated from Nauset High School; he later attended universities in both Connecticut and Minnesota. He will be fondly remembered for so many things: his gentle and easy-going nature, his sense of humor, generosity, and as a great inspiration to many. As a friend of Bills for the past 24 years, he had helped countless others with his intuitive, non-judgmental, and wise counsel. He lived his life with humility, grace, and gratitude. Joel was also an extraordinary builder, which combined with his creativity, talent, and integrity, made him an essential choice for many clients both on and off Cape Cod. Many fine homes and renovations stand as testimony to his art. He leaves a deeply grieving family: wife Laura Scheel and cherished 5 year-old son Cole William of East Orleans; brothers Chip Benton, Noah and Dane Benton; stepsister Lara Knowlton, stepmother Deborah Benton; father Alfred Benton; mother Arlyne Benton; two nephews and three nieces. Friends are invited to a potluck celebration of Joels life on Saturday, March 16, at the Methodist Church in Wellfleet, from 24 p.m. In lieu of flowers, devoted friends have created a fund for young Coles future education (checks payable to "Ameriprise Financial FBO Cole W. Benton," P.O. Box 417, East Orleans, MA 02643). Or, some may wish to donate in Joels name to VNA Hospice, whose generosity, sensitivity, and assistance were beyond extraordinary (VNA Hospice, 434 Route 134, S. Dennis, MA 02660).

I see all these fine things written about Joel and I wish i had never lost contact with him.
I broke both my legs the day after Christmas in 1968. Joel then broke his leg about a month later. I was attacked and mauled by a dog a year later and sure enough Joel was attacked by a dog a few months later. Thats when our parents said "That enough you two". I missed my alternate family

Joel was my best friend while growing up. I spent a lot of time with his family in Wallingford CT. We were like brothers, but after I went in the Navy we lost contact. Rest in Peace brother. Your family was my family.

So sad to hear about Joel. Such a unique, direct, intelligent man. I waited on him at Mid Cape Home Centers for a long time. He definately had a special "light" about him, which i am sure is still radiating.

To Laura, Cole and family,
I sincerely give thanks for knowing Joel, a devoted husband, father, and friend.
He gleamed when he spoke of Cole and you. I was blessed to have know him in AA, constantly welcoming others and sharing the true message of the program.
His sense of humor will be remember.
God bless all of you at this time of grief.
Sincerely,

It is so difficult to speak about Joel in the past tense. My realization is that Joel is and was in the top of my list of the finest men I have known. I never had a list. It just came to me in thinking about who Joel was and who he was in his relationship to me and to others. When he was single, I always wanted to introduce him to one of my friends. I loved the romance of when he met Laura and... told Fred and me about Laura. .My heart is with Laura, Cole, his and Laura's family and all of us as friends.

I knew Joel best when we were young @ the Beachcomber. He was calm even then. And handsome! And funny. And Serious. My heart goes out to his family. A lovely man. Many memories.

Joel was a kind of genius, so quick thinking and full of human understanding--a rare combination. He was so proud of his family, and he should have had decades more to spend with them. He won't be forgotten, not ever.

March 8, 2013

Joel and all who knew him benefited from his open, large view of life. Just by seeing his kind face, you knew good people and good things existed in this world. Take care of yourself, Laura!
