Mercy Moore Obituary

Mercy B. Moore, formerly of Plymouth died June 18, 2013. Mrs. Moore was the daughter of Philip S. Barnes Sr. and Mercie Hatch Barnes of Plymouth, MA. After attending Plymouth Schools and graduating from Abbott Academy in Andover, MA she graduated from Westbrook Junior College in ME. She enlisted in the Navy and served from 1952 to 1956. After accounting classes at Bentley College, she worked for Mary Hennessey Furs of Boston. While living in Boston, her passion for Sailing on the Charles River led to her meeting and marrying William Whitney of Belmont, MA. It was on their boat that she excelled at predicted log contests in and around Boston Harbor. Following Mr. Whitneys death, She skippered her 46 foot Chris Craft to Florida and resided in Jensen Beach. It was during her time spent at Bailey Boat yard where she met and married John Moore and, together, became active supporting Habitat for Humanity. After Mr. Moores passing she remained busy with bridge groups in Jensen Beach as well as groups in and around Plymouth during the summer months. She was generous to and supportive of the Antiquarian Society, Pilgrim Hall, and First Parish of Plymouth. S he was especially supportive of and passionate about First Parishs restoration project. She is predeceased by her siblings Brooks, Parker and Philip Jr. She is survived by her brother Souther and his wife Fran of Plymouth and her nieces and nephews: Parker Barnes Jr., Sally Morrison, Jane Wallace, Kate Barnes, Richard Barnes, Hannah McCann, Laura Sewall, Emily Fernez, Philip Barnes III, Brooks Dennis, and Souther Barnes Jr. as well as treasured great nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to: First Parish of Plymouth Restoration Fund, 19 Town Square, Plymouth, MA 02360. A memorial service will be held at the Firs t Parish Church of Plymouth on July 26th at 10:00 AM.
