Robert Homer Obituary

Robert H. Homer, 89, died on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the Massachusetts General Hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Chelsea on May 14, 1923 the son of the late Robert Homer and Olive (Thistle) Homer. He was the devoted husband for 55 years of the late Jean M. (Harden) Homer, who died on May 29, 2006. He was the adored and adoring father of Julia Homer of Hopkinton, Jill Homer of Millis, Margaret Homer of Sherborn, Elizabeth Homer of Sherborn , and Laura Homer of Arlington and beloved grandfather of Kathryn, Lyle, Robert, and Alice. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Edith Thistle of Skowhegan, ME and June Hurlbert of Epping, NH, an d by his nephews, Dale, Robert, Jeff, and Roy. Mr. Homer lived in Sherborn for 52 years. After serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific and China during World War II, he received his BS in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University. He had a long and distinguished career as a civil engineer, working on the Interstate highway system and later, as Town Engineer and Head of the Department of Public Works for the towns of Methuen, Franklin, and Dover, retiring at the age of 86. An avid horseman, he was a member of the Norfolk and Millwood Hunt clubs, an active member of the Sherborn Democratic Town Committee, and a founding member of the Sherborn Forest and Trails Association. He will be remembered most for his lively, generous, kind, and loving spirit, which made the house in Sherborn a home not just for his direct kin but for several generations of friends and friends of friends, as well as a sometimes disorderly menagerie of horses, dogs cats, chickens, and donkeys. Arrangements by the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Route 30), Cochituate Village, Wayland. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 1 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 11 Washington St., Sherborn.
