All Veterans Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2007.
From Vimy to Normandy to Kapyong, Canada's warriors fought valiantly for liberty and freedom. They continue the fight today, in Afghanistan and other fronts of the war on terror.

When Canadians vote in elections, read news reports critical of their governments, even stroll freely down their streets, they have veterans to thank.

On Nov. 11, we honour them.

Here's your chance to share your thoughts about a veteran you may have known, retell a story passed down from generations or express what this day means to you.

It was an honor getting to know Pauline. She must have done a wonderful job as a nurse. She was a generous and fun- loving lady and great neighbor to my daughter,Juliet. Pauline gave me one of my sweet house cats from a litter born to a stray mamma cat she took in ten years ago. We will miss how she loved the Rockies and Halloween and Christmas. God bless you,Pauline. Francie and Peter

"Freedom is not free."
There is a huge price to pay for the freedom we enjoy and take for granted. Thank you, and God Bless all Veterans. They truly are heroes!

My Father Raymond Gabrieau and his brother's Fred and Rudolph (Pete) Gabrieau and My Mother's brother Hector Filiault (May they all Rest in Peace) have fought in the 2nd W.W. They all came back alive and they had families to come back to. I have never realized how important their roles in this war were till now. I wish I would have had the insight to know the grief and worry of our Mother's at this time but, as we grow older we find that we now worry about our sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters in this time of strife and war.

May they rest in Peace and know that none of them are forgotten. I also want to acknowledge my Dad, Jack Podger, who also served with the Essex Scottish and made it home safely. We would like to thank our Dad, Joseph Brecka, from the bottom of our hearts, for his service to our country. For doing his part in keeping Canada free for all of us. He served with the XII Manitoba Dragoons. I deeply wish I had taken the time to talk to him about his war service when I had the chance and to tell him just how proud of him that I am. May God Bless all the Veterans.

Thank you. Without all who fought for Canada, Canada would not be how it is today. The Veterans fought for Freedom and Peace and we are all thankful for them. They risked their lives everday and fought for their country. Many Veterans didn't get much sleep. Some people did not like that they fought but without them fighting, Canada wouldnt be a free country. It was hard for those Veterans to leave their families and loved ones for a long time. Many didnt come back to their famileis but they risked their life to make Canada a better place to live in. All i say is...thank you.

I was born in 1941 and as a child going to school was told of the sacrifices our soldiers had made on our behalf. While I thought this to be very noble I would not truly understand, until I was an adult, what this really meant. As a young man working for Chrysler I met two men who had been captured by the Germans at Dieppe. One of them would occasionaly tell us a story about being a POW. The other would never talk about it. Two different men with two different ways of dealing with the past. This would be my first experience of hearing, first hand, about the horror's of war. Ever since that time when I meet a Veteran I offer my hand in thanks for what he did for me. John(Red) Cole passed away several years ago. The, other, Walter Hamel, left us just this week. I am very proud to have known these two Canadian heroes and I think of them many times each year. I am against all war but I realize that those who fight them do not create them. Please, when you cross the path of a Veteran, shake his hand and thank him for his sacrifice. You will both feel better for it.
