Beulah Raynor Obituary

RAYNOR WINSTON-SALEM Beulah Lassiter Raynor June 26, 1910 - Jan. 8, 2012 Mrs. Beulah Lassiter Raynor, 101, of Winston-Salem passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at her apartment at Vienna Village. She was born on June 26, 1910 in Rich Square, North Carolina to the late James Edward and Gussie Lassiter. Mrs. Raynor was preceded in death by her husband, K. T. Raynor, a legendary Professor of Mathematics at Wake Forest University. She was a well-respected Assistant Professor Emeritus of English at Wake Forest University as well as a member of Wake Forest Baptist Church. Mrs. Raynor graduated from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) in 1931 with a bachelor's degree in French and English. Thereafter, she taught in the public schools of several counties in eastern North Carolina for fourteen years. In 1945, Mrs. Raynor arrived at Wake Forest's old campus as the assistant to the university's first Dean of Women, Ms. Lois Johnson. In 1947, Mrs. Raynor received her master's degree in English from Wake Forest, and she began a long career teaching as a member of the English Department where she taught freshman composition, advanced composition, and American literature for 32 years before retiring in 1979 as an assistant professor. Mrs. Raynor held the distinction of becoming the first woman to receive tenure as a professor at Wake Forest, as well as one of the first women to be honored as a professor emeritus. One of her favorite quotes was from Jasper Memory, one of her professors at Wake Forest: "A teacher lights a thousand candles that come back to brighten his way." She often said "Whenever a student comes back to thank me, I tell him, 'You're one of my candles'." To those who knew her well, Mrs. Raynor was known as Beulah or Grandma. At all times, she was a loyal and generous neighbor, a kind and caring friend, a surrogate mother and grandmother, and a fierce Wake Forest sports fan. Beulah is survived by many friends and loved ones who were fortunate to share their lives with her. A funeral service will be held at Davis Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University on Wednesday, January 11, at 2:00 p.m. Beulah's friends are invited to gather at Salem Funeral Home, corner of Reynolda and Polo Road afterwards to celebrate her life and share their memories of her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Beulah Lassiter Raynor and Kenneth Tyson Raynor Scholarship Fund at Wake Forest University or to the Beulah Lassiter Raynor Scholarship Fund at East Carolina University. I'm sorry I'm so late to see and respond to this. When I got to Wake, I was YEARS behind everyone else. She made time for me and taught me how to write good papers. I went on the grad school, and remembered her with every paper I wrote. I taught my daughter, when she was an Y princess girl, how to write a research paper. I was honored to believe she actually liked me.

Beulah was a wonderful and great woman....I had the great priviledge to meet her and to share the same birthdate with her. I meet her on her 100th birthday and I felt so blessed to have met her....I will truly miss her and if we all could be just half the person that she was this world would be a better place!!!! God Bless you Beulah!!!!

Mrs. Raynor was a true lady. She was one of the few left who cared about the "Wake Forest Family" . We will miss her.

Beulah Lassiter was my Mother's High School English teacher at Lewiston High School in Bertie County. Later on Beulah Raynor taught my Mother English at Wake Forest College in Wake Forest. Right now I'm certain the folks in heaven are getting a lecture on Wake Forest Basketball.

She was a genuine character.

Always that beautiful Smile!!!

Ms Beulah was a dear friend, she was always in good spirits when I would come to her apartment to care for her,if she was upset when I arrived we would always find something silly to talk about and she would beam that wonderous smile at me and we would have another grand evening. Beulah will be missed very much, but I know she is in Gods arms looking down on us,we have another Angel looking down on us all.

Beulah was a faithful member of Wake Forest Baptist Church. I remember when my children were young and my youngest called her Grandma Blulah. She loved all of the children and they her. Her love and generosity remain with those of us who loved her.

Mrs. Raynor was my faculty advisor for all four years at Wake. She was a stern teacher and a dear friend through the years. I got married after my freshman year and she attended the wedding in Lewisville and made me feel very special. She was always there to help and advise me long after graduation. Her birthday was 1 day before my anniversary and we shared a special bond. She is truly one of the brightest candles of my life. In later years we often saw and celebrated Wake Wins in sports.

Thanks for being such a special friend for me.
