Phyllis was such an inspiration to me during my years at WSSU. My heartfelt condolences to the family. I still have my recommendation letter she wrote for me to enter our illustrious sisterhood of Delta Sigma Theta.
Such a beautiful person and woman of class. She was professional, intelligent, and always had a listening ear.

I encountered Ms. Smith during my first year at WSSU in an 8am (!) psychology course. Besides being beautiful, and clearly just a few years above me and my classmates, Ms. Smith had a charm that was contagious. You just could not not like her. Still, she proved to be no weakling when one classmate decided to disrupt class one day. In what became a classic line for me and my friends to recite over and again, she told the trouble maker, "Boy, don't you know I'll take you to the hoop!" The class roared...but also understood who was clearly in charge. I will always remember her grace and beauty, her intellect and caring spirit as she helped to shape a young mind by her impact. Bless you and rest well, Ms. Smith.

It is with sadden regrets to hear of this loss. Although I have not seen Phyllis in a while, I had no idea of her health. She was as beautiful inside as well as outside. Such a kind lady. I worked with Phyliis at Dillards and also a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Mike jr. when you were young I would see her take you around the offering table and I thought what a beautiful little boy. Phyllis will be missed, but know that God is in control and I know she thought you that. I pray that God will continue to bless you during this time of sorrow. Take one day at a time and God will see you through.

I have lost a loving friend of many years. We worked together in Student Health while I was employed as a staff nurse. We knew each other during our youths. She supported me through my ups/downs. I will feel her loss very deeply, but know that she has been relieved of all pain. This shining light will burn as a memory to her life.

I was shocked and saddened by the passing of Phyllis. She was a force to be reckoned with. Her mere presence both physically and spiritually, were beautiful. She had such a loving candidness that was a gift. She inspired me so much as a young college student and soror. We will all miss her dearly, but her spirit will live forever in us.

I loved this woman. God knew what I needed when he brought her across my path in 1986 at Winston Salem State University. She has supported me through some rough times and she became my second mom. Even when she got ill, her love and support never stopped. She always had an encouraging word that always started off with "Baby", then she would proceed to gently tell me what I needed to hear. I will never forget her and she will always have a spot in my heart.
Thank you Ms. Smith for the contributions you made in my life they will always be remembered.
Michael (son), she loved you to no end. Everytime I would visit her, she always found a way to mention your name. She bragged of all your accomplishments and how proud she was of you. A smile would cover her face with every thought of you. She was indeed proud of her son. She had a love for you that was priceless and just know that you were her jewel.

Phyllis Smith was one of my instructors while attending WSSU (1981-1985). She would allow me to rest in her office while I pledged AKA during the spring of '83. She was the sweetest Delta I knew :-). I have known you since I was 15 years old. I thought that some day I would work along side you at the counseling center of WSSU, my alma mater. I just saw you! I cannot believe you are not going to be there when I walk the campus in the fall. You defied everything...age, wisdom, knowledge! You are my mentor, my friend and the big sister I never had. I will never forget how you would bribe my son with cheese crackers for a kiss! I will never forget your smile and your warmth and compassion. You saved me more than once. I only wish I could have returned the favor. I love you. I know you hear me and you are still watching over me like you always have. WSSU will never be the same without you.
To Lil Micheal- that's who you always were to me, since you were a little boy running around on campus with your mom calling your name. My heart goes out to you. She was loved and respected and she will be missed. You are in our prayers. We know you will continue on your journey and make her proud.
