Audrey Mae Goodin Haines, 91, died Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at home in Wilmington with family at her side. Her husband of 54 years, Carey Leigh Haines, preceded her in death in 2001. They were married June 27, 1947.
Audrey was born April 19, 1925 in Jamestown, Ohio to Orla F. and Joy Watts Goodin. She graduated from Ross High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Wilmington College in 1946.
She taught in Spring Valley Schools before becoming a full time mother and homemaker on the family farm near New Burlington, Ohio. In 1968 the family moved to Wilmington, where she worked for several years as curator of the Quaker Collection at Wilmington College. In 1978 she and Carey returned to farm life on Carter Road in the Sabina community, where she lived until 2003.
Audrey had been a member of Jamestown Methodist Church, Caesar's Creek Friends Meeting, Wilmington Friends Meeting, and Ada Chapel Friends Meeting.
She was a talented singer and pianist who loved classical music and opera. She accompanied many groups of singers and contributed music to her church, often playing her own compositions. She provided an example of lifelong learning, reading daily on a wide range of subjects. Her 1963 Britannica was a well-used and cherished possession.
She took endless delight in the large and small marvels of the natural world, particularly the sky, ocean shells and the bird kingdom. She wrote poetry throughout her life, and enjoyed Cape May's poetry club in her last years. She was respectful and kind to all, and was loved in return.
Audrey is survived by four daughters, Eleanor (Don) Elliott of Greensboro, North Carolina, mother of Jennifer Leigh (Richard) Booker of Snow Camp, North Carolina, and Justin Elliott, Joel Elliott, and Jonathan Elliott, all of Greensboro; Jennifer Clemens of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, mother of Loren Clemens, also of Winston-Salem; Rebecca (Phil) Cluxton of Martinsville, mother of Megan Hearne of Asheville, North Carolina and Peter Cluxton of Somerville, Ohio; and Ruthanna (Larry) Burton of Mocksville North Carolina, mother of Ben (Heather) Burton of Jonesville, North Carolina and Christopher Burton of Mocksville. There are eight beloved great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her sister-in-law, Marjorie McNemar Haines of Waynesville, also survives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Irene Goodin and Hazel (Lawrence) Foster.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 7 at the Cape May Retirement Community, 175 Cape May Drive, Wilmington. Interment will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

To the family of Audrey, I am very sorry to learn of your loss. She was a dear lady and friend. She had lovely musical ability, also. She gave freely of her talents to her church, in many other events and venues, and however and whenever she was asked to share them. Among these special events was at the wedding of my parents, Robert A.Hussey and Ruth Esther (Haines). Audrey sang at their wedding in 1946. She was a college friend of my mother. I was very sad to hear of her passing. Her most recent sharing of her piano playing was at Cape May Retirement Center in Wilmington, Ohio, where her music was so very much appreciated. My mother resides there, now, where Audrey recently did, also. Audrey married Carey Haines, who was a cousin of my mother's. Sincerely,
Pat (Green) & Larry Howard

Sorry for the passing of
Audrey. She was a cousin of mine. I always enjoyed visiting with her and Carey at family reunions. My husband and I visited with her at Friendly Retirement Center a couple of times when we were back in Ohio. I have special memories of how pleasant and talented she was.
