Robert E. Conover, 87, of Wilmington, passed away 5:20 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014 at his home. His loving wife of 58 years, Mary V. Johnson Conover, preceded him in death on June 13, 2006.
Bob was born on Nov. 21, 1926 in Wilmington, a son of the late H. Lee and Gertrude West Conover, and spent most of his childhood in Cuba, Ohio.
He was a 1944 graduate of Martinsville High School, and played on the tournament-winning Clinton County basketball team that year.
After graduating, he joined the United States Navy and served during World War II, returning home to marry his high school sweetheart, Mary, in 1948.
He worked with and was part-owner of Farquhar Heating & Air Conditioning Company for more than 40 years. He was truly committed to serving others through his volunteer work within the community.
He was a 45-year member of the Ohio State Patrol Auxiliary and a 23-year volunteer at Clinton Memorial Hospital.
He was also a member of the Wilmington Church of Christ, the American Legion Post 49 and the Clinton County Sportsman's Club.
While his mother was living, he visited her daily, along with the other patients of Prairie View Apartments, and then Wilmington Heath Care, caring for them and even taking them to see parades and other outdoor events.
Bob was an avid fisherman, hunter and marksman, enjoyed camping, raising a garden and other outdoor activities with his family and friends.
He is survived by a son, Dr. Steven (Vicky) Conover of Centerville; two daughters, Deborah (Buddy) Kienle of Clarksville, and Susan (Forrest) Priest of Leesburg; 10 grandchildren, Peter Conover, Luke Conover, Paul Conover, Grace Conover, Faith Conover, Cade Kienle, Drew Kienle, Saylor Priest, Conner Priest and Paris Priest; and a dear lifelong family friend, Grace Patton of Wilmington.
In addition to his wife and parents, two brothers, Jim Conover and Don Conover, preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10 at the Wilmington Church of Christ, with Steve Wetterhan officiating.
Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
The burial will take place in the Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington.
If desired, balloons will be collected and given to CMH and Cape May patients, or memorial contributions may be made to Community Care Hospice, P.O. Box 123, Wilmington, OH 45177.

Steve, Debbie, Susan, spouses and grandchildren
I am sorry I will not be able to attend the memorial services today for your father due to my work schedule but please know that my thoughts and prayers are with each one of you today and will be in the days to come. I have many fond memories of both your father and mother as a part of the Wilmington Church of Christ church family and always appreciated good talks and visits with them through the years. I will especially miss Bob sitting in the row in front of me at church and visiting with him before the worship services began. May you feel God's comfort just now.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family...he was such a dear friend! Since I moved a year ago...I have missed my neighbor very much! As I would look out my kitchen window, I would see him reading or watching tv as he sat by the big picture window...I always said a prayer for him after your mom passed away! He loved my grapevine tree on my deck...when I sold my house...I left it there for the couple to keep the lights shining for my dear friend Mr. Conover! God love him!
