Oakes Cynthia Wharton Oakes, 49, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. She was born in Roanoke and was preceded in death by her father, Odell Wharton. She graduated from Chilhowie High School in 1979 where she was drum major for two years. She graduated from Wytheville Community College and was employed as an RN at the South Western Virginia Mental Health Hospital. Survivors include her husband, Chad Oakes of Marion; two daughters, Samantha Sexton and Alisha Sexton; her mother, Lula Grey Wharton of Chilhowie; sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Chris Johnson of Chilhowie; brother, Curtis Wharton of Montpelier; two nieces, Megan Lester and Ronnie Johnson; one nephew, Jack Wharton; mother and father-in-law, Richard Oakes and Betty Kirk of Marion; special aunt and uncle, Randall and Betty Jo Carrier of Bristol; and several cousins and other family members. Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with Pastor Mike Sage officiating. The family received friends Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers were appreciated or memorial contributions can be made the Cynthia Wharton Oakes Memorial Fund for her Children, P.O. Box 250, Chilhowie, VA 24319. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.bradleysfh.com. Bradley's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
