George Harold Whitt Mr. George Harold Whitt, age 84, of Swords Creek, VA, passed away Thurs., Aug. 26, 2010 at his home following a brief illness. He was born in Russell County and was the son of the late William F. and Dora Ethel Dye Whitt. He was a lifelong resident of the Swords Creek area and was retired from Norfolk and Southern Railway. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was a member of VFW Post #0208. He attended the Clearview Methodist Church. He loved watching sports and was a huge NASCAR fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant son, Ronald Keith Whitt; four sisters, Helen Justice, Hazel Compenell, Dorothy Stevens, and Olaf Boyd; and four brothers, Guy, Glenn, William Jr., and Jack Whitt. Survivors are: His loving wife of 60 years: Maxine Short Whitt; one daughter: Angie Hale and husband, Jimmy, of Abingdon, VA; two sons: Bill Whitt and wife, Donna, of Honaker, VA, Doug Whitt and wife, Sandy, of Swords Creek, VA; one brother: Ronnie Whitt and wife, Loretta, of Mechanicsville, VA; one special buddy: Luke Helton; five grandchildren: Adam Whitt, Brett Whitt, Brittany Hale, Jordan Whitt, and Matthew Hale; two step grandchildren: Chad Whited and Bethany Godsey; two great grandchildren: Gavin Whitt and Maggie Kay Whitt; three step great grandchildren: Ali Godsey, Lexie Godsey, and Kylie Godsey. Funeral services for George Harold Whitt were conducted Sat., Aug. 28, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, VA, with the Pastor James Brooks and Rev. Dennis White officiating. Interment was Sun., Aug. 29, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers were: Adam Whitt, Brett Whitt, Jordan Whitt, Matthew Hale, Greg Harmon, Brian Wright, Tom Harmon, Marty Short, and Sam Short. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 conducted military graveside rites. Friends called after 6:00 p.m. Sat. evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA.
