Hal Porterfield Sr.

Hal R. Porterfield Sr. Hal R. Porterfield Sr., 90, of Wytheville went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, from his home with his family by his side. Funeral service was held Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Revs. Norman Wilhoit and Joe Carrico officiating. Interment was in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 9. He was born Oct. 26, 1919, in Wythe County, son of the late Frank and Pearlie Virginia Aker Porterfield. He was a longtime devoted member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Guam. He was a member of I.B.E.W. (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) for over 65 years. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 69 years, Edith Porterfield of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Hal R. Porterfield Jr. and Carolyn S. Porterfield of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie P. Terry and Thomas "Tom" Terry of Wytheville; three grandchildren and their spouses, Heather P. Rowe and Brad Rowe of Christiansburg, Shauna T. Eversole and Allen Eversole of Max Meadows and Shane Terry of Wytheville; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Grace Rowe, Dylan Nicholas Rowe and Morgan Alexis Eversole; special nephew and niece, Garland and Libby Ingo; and numerous other nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 W. Ridge Rd., Wytheville, VA 24382. The family expresses gratitude to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, especially Michelle, Circle Home Care, especially Debbie, Mary and Dr. Harkless for their care and compassion. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.
