John Turyn Jr.

John Turyn Jr. John Turyn Jr., age 92 of Claypool Hill, Va., passed away Friday, November 12, 2010. Born April 15, 1918, at Jenkins, Ky., he was the son of the late John Turyn Sr. and Anna Zablocki Turyn. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of West Virginia University in 1950 with a mining engineer degree. He worked for several major coal mining companies, most notably his 35 years with Island Creek Coal Company, where he retired as President of the Virginia Pocahontas Division. He was awarded the Erskine Ramsey award in 1981. Mr. Turyn was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Flossie Tomblin Turyn; two brothers, Frank (Tubby) Turyn and Tony Turyn; and two sisters, Frances Maynard and Helen Tothe. He is survived by his son, John Turyn III and wife Michelle of Claypool Hill, VA; one brother, Victor Turyn and wife Eileen of Ellicott City, MD; one sister-in-law, Mary Ann Turyn of The Villages, FL; several nieces, nephews, friends and the caring staff at the Mayfair House also survive . Funeral mass was conducted at 11 A.M. Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Richlands, Va., with Fr. Gaudencio Pugat officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Family and friends served as pallbearers. Reception followed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tazewell, Va. The family received friends from 6 to 9 P.M. Sunday at Singleton Funeral Service at Cedar Bluff, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 304 Tazewell Avenue, Tazewell, VA 24651.
