XENIA — Norman Charles Canterbury Symonds, 87, of Xenia, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Soin Medical Center. He was born March 7, 1927, In Sandys, Bermuda. Norman was the son of Frederick and Hazel (DeShield) Symonds. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Alan, James, Cyril Symonds; two sisters, Mildred Symonds Dixon and Flora Symonds Maybury. Upon moving from Bermuda to Wilberforce, Norman obtained employment with Central State University in the Maintenance Department. He began his career with CSU on September 16; 1957.Norman enjoyed working and referred to it as his recreation. He retired on May 11, 2007 after 49 years, seven months and twenty-five days. Even though Norman enjoyed working, he also enjoyed playing tennis and shooting pool. He worked part-time in the pool room of the student union and taught many of the students how to play. He was an inspiration to many who passed through the campus and the community of Wilberforce and Xenia. He leaves to cherish his memory of his son, Norman Charles Curtis (Patricia) Symonds of McLean, Va; daughter, Diana Whitecross Taylor of Somerset ,Bermuda; sister, Bernice Symonds of Bermuda; special nephew ,Alfred Maybury of Bermuda; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Service for Norman Symonds will be held on Monday August 11, 2014 at United A.M.E Church 286 E. Church Street Xenia, Ohio. Visitation will be 11:00am until time of service which will be at 12 noon with Rev. Dr. John E Freeman officiating. Interment will follow at Cherry Grove Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Porter-Qualls-Dunlap Funeral home.

As a CSU student I remember seeing Mr. Symonds in his white painters uniform on campus smiling. Sometimes I use to observe his painting skills - great person. My prayers for the family.
