George McCormack Obituary

MT. LEBANON George Webster McCormack, 46, died Saturday, November 30, 2013, at his home in Mt. Lebanon. He was born on January 11, 1967, to D. James and Janet (Philips) McCormack; and was the loving husband of Kimberly Ann (Ostrowsky) McCormack; father of Brock Grayson McCormack; and brother of Karen McCormack, Jessica Baughman, and Dan McCormack. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. George was a Physical Education teacher and head wrestling coach in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District for the past 19 years. A 1985 graduate of Dallastown Area High School, George then went on to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh in 1990, where he wrestled and obtained Bachelors and Masters degrees in Physical Education. He had a passion for teaching and enjoyed coaching his athletes. He was a huge fan of all Pittsburgh sports teams and loved taking his son to games. George was also a devoted fan of the University of Michigan, his father's alma mater, and loved spending summers with his family at the beach in Ocean City, N.J. Services will be held in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1066 Washington Road, Pittsburgh 15228 on Monday at 1 p.m. A celebration of life service will be held in York at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Brock Grayson McCormack at PNC Bank. The family thanks all the friends and family members who continue to provide love and support through this difficult time. www.laughlinfuneralhome.com

I was coincidentally just thinking about Coach McCormack this past week. As I get older in life, I tend to think about George and other past coaches during workouts. I can't help but go through their past teachings like old recordings stored in the mind as I work through the technical motions of my workouts. It helps me consider what additional lessons I might learn as I progress through life from a more experienced lens. It's almost like free advice from Kings of the past. The best part about it is that with new life experiences you can draw a better understanding of their personality. One thing that resonates with me as we were prepping for an upcoming wrestling match, George would call the team into the team room and he would match us against our opponents. He would tell us directly to our faces if he considered whether or not we would win or lose based on record and performance. I remember once he said to me, "Calvin I am expecting you to lose this match". It hit hard internally, and George noticed. He was perceptive. He didn't baby me, he just looked at me like a man and followed up with, " prove me wrong". I did end up proving him wrong, that outcome was a victory for me. However, as an older man, now just barely 7 years younger than when George passed, I see that coaching tactic with a different lens. He was motivating me to defy odds that were somewhat realistic but maybe perhaps just inflated to motivate me. Some athletes perform better with praise, others with opportunities to defy odds. The same wisdom is true in life. Thanks Coach for your continued life lessons. As I review your teachings in life, I see you as a warrior and you made us men. I am forever wiser for your teaching.

I had the pleasure of coaching track with George for many years at Baldwin High School and am deeply saddened by this news. My prayers are with the McCormack family. He and I shared the upper field for many seasons. His laugher was contagious, his coaching built champions, his leadership touched us all. Yes, he was a "champion of a man", and we are all better off for knowing him. I am sure I speak for all of his athletes, fellow coaches, and all those that came to know him. We will miss you dearly but we salute you for a life of excellence.

To George's family, friends, and loved ones...my deepest sympathy. I can honestly say I have never met a kinder, gentler, caring person than Big George. I knew him through wrestling. We were teammates at Pitt and coached against(together) for 19 years. Big George was truly concerned about his wrestlers, even more off the mat than on! I know his loved ones will carry on his legacy of caring. Rest in Peace Big Guy.

I met Big George several years ago as he was a brother in our annual summer golf event in Avalon. Big George even attended this year through his battle. I don't think any of us ever felt this was the last time we would play golf with Big George. The unique thing about our annual golf trip, which we have been doing for many years, is that most of us only knew people by their nickname and not their real names. I only wish I knew his middle name was Webster. I'll miss you Big George. My thoughts and prayers to his family. - SHEIBS

George,

I remember spending alot of my youth at your families home on Imperial Drive, York, Pa. I remember hanging out with you and Dan. I remember talking you in to going out for wrestling because you always beat me during our impromtu wrestling matches even though I was a boxer. I was happy to see that you listen to me and excelled as a wrestler at Dallastown High School.I remember the love and kindness your family showed me and I felt very much a part of your family. The years have come and pass but I will never forget you Brother. You are missed my friend. God has given you wings and I will see you in heaven one day.

I met George in kindergarten. Even then, he was kind, happy, and full of laughter. I can't ever remember him without a smile...(except when he was on the football field or wrestling mat, of course). Just from reading all of the special memories that everyone has of George makes it clear that he was just as wonderful an adult as he was a kid and teenager. I am so sorry for his wife, son, and the whole McCormack family. I have been so sad since hearing of his passing. I can't even imagine your pain. You are in my prayers. God bless you.

George was a great teammate. He had the longest laugh I can remember. When something made him laugh, he would just crack up. Tho I hadn't seen him many years, I always remembered him as one of my favorite football teammates from Dallastown. Safe Passage #76. You are missed...

Kim, Brock and the McCormack Family,

My deepest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. I had the pleasure of knowing Big George at Pitt and we had a lot of great times together that I will forever cherish. There will only be one Big George and I am forever grateful that I had an opportunity to have known him.

December 2, 2013

Just a note to George's wife and son. I had the privilege to know George through wrestling at Pitt. Actually a short story is when George was being recruited at Pitt from Temple I got to take him out on his visit. It was late that evening and we were at the Original Hot Dog Stand (The "O"). I asked George if he wanted something to eat except I called him Bruce. George graciously looked at me and said "Who you calling Bruce". I called him Bruce the whole evening. It was an inside joke with George and myself for years. When I would see him years later I would call out "Yo Bruce" and we would both belly laugh. George will be missed. You both are in my thoughts in prayers. What a great man,
Your friend

To our neighbors, we are so very sorry for your loss. You were the first neighbors to welcome us to the neighborhood. The first to invite us in to your home. The first to lend your condolences when we experienced our own time of grief. Thank you! George was a great neighbor who looked out for everyone on our street. George never hesitated to take time to stop and listen to the gibberish filled story my 3 then 4 year old son would spout out after screaming "Mr. McCormack" . I Always appreciated that he took the time to listen to the children. I always admired the way George pushed through even when not feeling well and continued to do his best not to slow down. George and Kim have raised such an Amazing son and Brock will carry those special memories forever. Kim if you ever need anything..... We are right next door. Rest in Peace, George.

So saddened to hear about this loss - way too young. George and I went to the prom together senior year. We looked like we belonged on top of a wedding cake - he wore a white tuxedo with tails! Great memories to carry us through. In reading the posts, it sounds like George lived a very full life! Prayers to the entire McCormack family!

I worked with George for many years, both at the middle school and at the high school. He was a steady beacon during dark times and a source of great laughter during the lighter moments. The number of souls he touched, and the impact he made on all of us are a tribute to the value of this man. The world is truly a better place because of his presence with us. Peace and comfort to all of his family at this time--

Good old GMACK,
You were my gym teacher at Baldwin and there was not a day that went by that you did not have me cracking up for some reason. Mainly because I never participated and you would always try to scare me by telling me I was going to fail haha, but it did not bother me so eventually you stopped trying. That is the best memory I have from you. I wish your family my deepest condolences and sympathy during this rough time. Your legacy will live on GMACK!

Fewer men have touched and inspired as many young individuals as Coach McCormack. He motivated me to achieve and become more. Much of my foundation has come from his coaching and mentoring. I only had the pleasure of meeting Mr. George McCormack once, but his name was mentioned in my household fondly by my nephews and brother. Mr. McCormack helped my oldest nephew get a job helping younger kids learn to wrestle. He also helped my younger nephew not only in wrestling, but also when their father (my brother) passed away. Mr. McCormack never passed judgement he truly helped my younger nephew by giving him an ear to listen to, a shoulder to lean on and a hand to help. I am so sorry for the family's and the communities loss. Mr. McCormack and his family will be in my prayers.
